A 1950’s Hillman Minx at about 14 years old in a paddock on my parents’ property - a surprise Christmas present for my brother and me from my parents - spent more time scouring scrap yards for parts and fitting them than we did behind the wheel. Taught us a lot about dirt track driving and cleared the paddock of all shrubs and saplings!!

“Not this actual one ... but one just like it, learnt to drive on it in the woods when I was 12 or 13 yo.

Been a Land Rover Man ever since to this day.🙂”(Image)

Learned to drive on a Lightweight ( and weirdly a Golf Gti Mk1) - both daughters learned to drive on a Series 11a and the grandchildren are learning to drive on Series Toylander. Mrs JB drives a Puma 110.

Landys have, and will always be, part of our family.

The Quickly was my first vehicle purchased smile at 12 years old to play with after my Fergie drive at around 9.

Graham, it's a library picture and a beauty, I don't have a shot of the original.

Quite a few of us seem to have had a rural background where such things are easier to manage at an early age.

I'm afraid compared to you lot, mine was quite normal. At 17, I bought an ex Metropolitain Police Mini. It did about 50mpg--------- of engine oil but it got me around.

Here for a good time not a long time!!

When I was 3 years old I started our family car (an Opel Rekord) and drove it against the next wall - which fortunately was only a few meters away from the starting point. After that incident my parents never left the keys unattended any more.

My first privately owned car was a new Triumph Spitfire.

First thing with an engine was a Raleigh Moped (I was 11) given me by an uncle to ride round the lock up garages where dad kept his car. Aged around 13 I was allowed to drive the family Ford Y model up and down a relatives farm track. Around 17 I was allowed to bring the lorries in from the yard to the workshop as it was private ground, 2.5 Ton Leyland FG bread vans. Never took a car test until I was 20. My first ‘real’ vehicle was a Ford Corsair 2000E.

A Mk 1 Lambretta LI150 during the ‘Mod’ era. It was a few years old even then and had been restored by its previous owner with crackle finish blue and red paint. I was never sure if the finish was deliberate. Bought with the insurance money from a stolen Fiorelli racing bike, I wish I still had the Fiorelli but do not yearn for the Lambretta which was also stolen. I lived in Ealing at the time.
