My Fairbourne screen is cracked at the point where the tongue fits into the dash top. The outer edge is starting to pull outwards. I have drilled a small hole at what was the limit of the crack but its extended further. The material is Lexan. Any ideas to stopping the crack getting larger. I was considering super glue in the crack & pushing the outer edge of the screen rearwards till the glue has set. Another tack would be to glue a small reinforcing strip on the rear of the screen but what material & what glue?

The leather on drivers seat back is showing signs of the leather surface lifting off in one narrow strip. Any suggestions how to treat this to stop it getting worse.

There are some acrylic glues that have a very thin viscosity that might flow into the crack. I have used it extensively on acrylics but never “lexan”. A call to some of the manufacturers might be helpful. The stuff is so strong that i have glued cylinders to flat plated and put the entire glued parts in a metal lathe and turned them and they did not fly apart.

Here in the states they use various suction devices to create a vacuum that pulls the adhesive into the crack or chip in glass windshields. Might need a different adhesive for Lexan but the principle should be the same. Most of the auto glass replacement shops here have the device. Might try motorcycle shops too as most bike windscreens are either Lexan or polycarbonate.
Would think that most any auto restoration shop that deals in high end classic cars would be able to help with your leather issue.

re the leather - do you know how that happened ? was it one of accident or a recurring wear from something touching it?
There are loads of youtube vids on leather restoration.
I had to repair similar on my Porsche , very fine wet and dry to smooth the surface and remove the tufts around the gouge followed by leather repair paste and appropriate dye did the trick for me.

My early Fairbourne screen also cracked in the same place. I contacted Fairbourne and they supplied me with a pair of replacement screens, not FOC but not wildly expensive either. The new screens are slightly thicker and have not shown any signs of cracking in the 3 or 4 years since replacement.

I think that is for curing water leaks - I used it on my Land Rover roof - it gets in and seals tiny gaps. It was moderately effective.

nippymog the leather damage is a result of wear.

Planenut I really want to avoid taking the screen out if possible. I reckon getting the screen out is likely to damage the paint around the dash top slot. I heard that Fairbourne have stopped doing the screen but their website does not work properly to check.

Knucklefreak I doubt that suction devices would work as the crack extends to the edge & you would not get a seal.

I bolted through a small metal plate either side of the crack in my screen. But I need to ping the screen maker who supplied Fairbourne whom they kindly gave me details for. Might be a good idea to keep some spares …
