Thank you everyone for the info... the one thing I have is plenty of wood screws from the days of when Screwfix sold mainly screws and they sold good mixed size trade packs.. Its another job to set right, but I am glad I found that the light was hanging off before it was lost completely. I might create two half round spacers from stainless round bar that would fit and fill most of the slots rather that relying on the screw head to clamp ( once I know where the lights height should be for my spare ) this would provide a more secure clamping force over the slot area with less slop. Again, many thanks to everyone for feedback.

I've considered making an aluminium plate Dave, but then I have to fill and refill the holes, because it would look terrible with those random screws. Mine is firm enough and the screws are covered with red electrical tape.

Consider this.

• The cobra, IMHO, is bloody ugly
• It sticks up in the mirror
• If you tour, luggage on the rack obscures it
• A garage, remaining nameless, pointed out that the Cobra is not required for the MOT

Following advice elsewhere on this forum I replaced it with an LED strip on the luggage rack.

• It's higher than the wing mounted brake lights
• it's right at the back (have you ever been confused by pick-ups & trucks where the brightest lights are on the cab?)
• always, always visible

LED strip from Amazon, a few P clips (Vehicle Wiring Products) and a strip of aluminium - job done

Since I could not really make friends with the cobra but do not want to give up safety I have replaced it with a strong but dainty motorcycle LED brake light. My solution when I drive without luggage.
