Does anyone have a secret tip or a magical tool to help remove the alternator on a 1994 +8 so the fan belt can be replaced? I can access the rear long bolt on the alternator housing through the slot in the side panel behind the wheel, but how do you undo the shorter front bolt? Any sagely advise gladly accepted.

Bruce, i have just had my alternator off (twice) last week its on a 1985 plus8 with a v belt, you can do it easily with a short 1/2 inch combi spanner and a boomerang type ring spanner, once you have done it a couple of times it is easy peasy.

Good luck.

I had a nightmare getting my alternator off when it fails a couple of months ago. I decided to make a modification to the inner wing to make things easier to put back and remove if needed in the future

First removal took 2 1/2 hours replacement about 10 mins

Should add that the obstruction spanner method didn’t work for me as my fittings were metric and my obstruction spanner’s are imperial.

Yes it is tricky on my 1980 +8 even with the slot hole in the inner wing. Back in 2016 my new Lucas alternator failed near Lyons after 650 miles!! Melvyn who HADN'T supplied the recently fitted one got me a replacement, received within 24 hrs.

Thanks chaps: I am going to get an offset and a curved spanner which should do it. I replaced the alternator 14 years ago but have completely forgotten how I did it, must have a been a bad experience and I mentally blocked it out!!!!

A fellow TMer messaged me to remind me that the belt can be removed by loosening the adjuster bolt on the slotted arm and moving the alternator down to slacken the belt. This I had already tried but the alternator would not move enough to allow the belt to come off the pulleys, but it did trigger a thought about size of belts and were they the same. I looped the new belt over the top pulleys and realized it was lightly larger in length than the one fitted, so loosened the adjuster bolt moved the alternator to slacken the belt then cut the belt to remove fitted the new belt and hey presto all is good.
