I thought it was about time that ATR shocks had their own thread! For those that don't know, ATR shocks are a premium product that cost around twice as much as Spax adjustables, but half as much as Ohlins. To give some idea, my front pair cost me £720 in Feb 2021. The standard colour is a kind of copper-orange but I chose to have the optional black finish for a small premium.

Simple 'Hard' & 'Soft' adjustment

Nicely machined spacers can be made to fit your chassis exactly.

It's also worth investing in a couple of decent C Spanners that actually fit the adjusters - like these: Motamec MT-CSP1-ST, £21 for the pair from Motorsport-Tools.com


At one stage, ATR supplied o-rings to fit between the bearings and spacers to keep the weather out but I don't think they do any more. However This O-Ring from Amazon seems to work well: 26mm OD x 19mm ID x 3.5mm thick. They come in a pack of 50 and you only need 4 per shock so you will have plenty of spares!

A well known jazz musician has sourced these Uprated Bearings that may be worth investigating when the standard ones wear out.

Talking of that, ATRs are fully serviceable and can be rebuilt at the ATR factory as necessary.

Interesting thanks - have been idly wondering if this might be a useful upgrade at some point. Craig at MWS Services mentioned on Facebook he had just fitted some to a customer's car. Plus my "rear" seems to be pretty low compared to many other M3W (EU3s) at the recent Goggles n Gauntlets trip (although I didnt ground anywhere even 2-up).


"Keeping weather out" would seem a good idea for an M3W front suspension - excuse my ignorance but where would these go? on the shock's piston?

Nice thread Bunny. Definitely one for later after I’ve got over the shock of buying new exhausts.

How hard or soft do you tend to set them?

As a starting point try these settings for the ATR shock absorbers:

Front: Spring is 38mm (from underside of lower lock ring to the black paint line after the threads)
5 clicks from full soft. (there are 12 clicks)

Rear: Spring 45mm.
3 clicks from full soft.

That should give a fairly level ride height of about 150mm from the lower edge of the body to the ground, when two up and a reasonably soft ride. The limitation on the rear adjustment is the clearance between the lower collar and the drive belt on the LH shock. I have used ATR shocks on my M3W for about 3 years now and would say they are pretty good value.

I am curious, which model number did you get? and are they available stateside?

The ATR shocks info is in the Alternative Parts List on page 7, accessed through the thread at the top of this forum. They are sold as a Morgan 3 Wheeler kit for front and rear with the very original numbers of ATR MOG 001 (front) and ATR MOG 002 (rear). That includes the spacers for the mounts. Dampertech are the agents for them in the UK and you can contact Dave on dave@dampertech.co.uk . I am sure he will be able to let you know how best to get them in the USA.

By the way, the standard colour for M3W Dampertech/ATR shocks is now black. Other colours are available as a special order.
