F1 has become mere entertainment with the drivers being puffed up as gladiators. It used to be a technical competition between car makers and indeed Enzo regarded drivers as almost dispensible. Now the technical rules are so tight that the differences between cars are tiny all to make the viewing excting for those like SWMBO who dont know a camshaft from a conrod. What puzzles me is that they havent yet gone the Nascar route with just one chassis builder and two engine builders. Better still make the game even safer by runbning the races on a computrer game.
Where are the turbo cars we once had? The six wheelers, the fan cars, the 4 wheel drive cars, the different engine sizes?
You come to hillclimbing for variety and variation! 🙂
Just back from a week pit-crewing for Team GB in Braga in Portugal ... GB took the Ladies Champion and two of our guys were Second and Third in Cat 4 .... 5 Brits in the overall European Top Twenty
All that in cars set up for our short narrow hills and on a track they'd never seen before against the European hillclimb royalty who race there all the time!
Vid of one of Alex's runs ... brave lad hitting 160 mph on a track he'd never seen before the weekend!! .... beats F1 hands down for sheer committment!!
If it's innovation you miss there's plenty on the hills ..... how about this? ..... 1700cc Cosworth giving 400+ bhp as it has a helicopter starting turbine who's exhaust drives a turbo at constant boost feeding the engine .... oh, and it's 4wd as well ... a real one-off 🙂
Loads of interesting engineering flying up hills all over the UK
K
Ps .... the turbine exhaust is used to blow the undertray for greater downforce once it's spun the turbo ..... you get real innovation once you have a simple and open set of rules built around cubic capacity and body type and size.

Sheer commitment doesn't begin to describe that run! Heart stopping! And all that Armco just waiting to welcome him into its's arms. I agree, anyone bored with F1 (I'm not) should try spectating at some local tracks, especially hill climb.
Perhaps things will improve next season with the change of mamagement plus the possibility of Andretti coming in with Sauber plus perhaps the VW group, we can only hope.
Oh, did I enjoy the race from Texas, YES and YES, Kimi and Fernado were worth sitting up for alone. More of this please and what a great finish with Max just making across the line. Brilliant, can't wait for Mexico when I think we can assume Perez will have a rocket up his rear end.
