And you get to use that cool little Lucas key thingamabob with gap gauge. Am I missing something? Not much use on a Motorcraft dizzy which has a completely different gap size

I use just a points replacement kit from Accuspark about £40 on the old classic Mini as modern contacts and condensers are cr4p & don't last, dead easy to fit & times-up spot on
You keep the existing dizzy & coil, so if it goes pop on holiday you can swop back to points in ten mins

You keep the existing dizzy & coil, so if it goes pop on holiday you can swop back to points in ten mins That's what i was hoping to do with the Powerspark kit - thankfully I kept all the points parts so just swapped themback in. Hoping to get something I can fit and forget.

I did build a little box of hidden electronics for about £30 for the old F Super that kept the points & condenser for originality, been super reliable and no spark erosion on the points at all, it was a commercial kit you soldered up diy, but I can't remember it's name I'm afraid

Had the same problem on an MG Midget I bought. It was set up to autocross and had electronic Ign and a weber carb and ran great until one day....in Florida. We put it on a rollback and transported it to an MG tuner in St Petersburg. He ripped out the electronics and put back the points and I drove back to the campground. Did I mention we towed the MG behind the motor home?

Why do folks want to get away from points? They seem simple, reliable, robust and cheap. And you get to use that cool little Lucas key thingamabob with gap gauge. Am I missing something?
For me, it's not so much the points themselves as the mechanical advance that's sub-optimal. An electronic ignition system is able to provide a much better spark advance profile than you can get with whirling bob weights. Yes, agree, and over a wider rev range than bob weights can ever accomplish.

I fitted one of those to the Spitfire 1500. Had a German name IIRC, but I bought the kit in Maplins. Less than £20 at the time.

Not long after I bought my Plus 4, I went to electronic ignition trying to figure out what electric bugaboo led to my car having intermittent starting issues. Now 5 years older, and smarter, and finally knowing the answer (faulty wire from ignition switch to coil) I could have predicted it was not the distributor. But I tried electronic anyway (noticed no diff). then I sent the distributor to a guy for formal rebuild, and he set me back to points and says I won’t regret it. Years later I am inclined to agree.

If you have Weber 40s on a crossflow it's almost impossible to get at the distributor to adjust points so you need a system you can just forget about.

I had a Luminition system which was optically triggered buy a daisy wheel, and was far superior to points. cold and damp weather it would fire up fine no voltage drop capacitor issues etc.etc.etc. Yeah for sure some electronic kit is worth it`s weight in gold...  Good luck in your choices.

Not long before I sold my +8 I tried
electronic ignition on it Mallory two point distributer. Could not get it to run clean on lt.gave up after about a month and put new points back in lt.back to normal.
