here's our two old 'World Trees' snoozing the winter away in the rather battered post-Arwen garden.
It's noticeable that the old country dwellings in this corner almost always had ash trees planted like this at the end of the vegetable garden ..... I've always wondered if it was a hark-back to norse folklore hanging on as far as the early 1800s.
Lovely. Very sadly we had to have 11 mature ash trees felled this year thanks to Dieback. Still, at least they'll keep us warm for a few winters. I reckon a lot of the pagan beliefs and traditions lingered in rural areas for much longer than many would think. And of course the local hippies love to revive stuff like Wassailing and Beating the Bounds, which is nice.

Me too. Never had much truck with Christianity. Any excuse for a pissup, though. I rather prefer the idea of the three goddesses that tend Ygdrassil weaving our futures in her roots. Let's hope they can come up with something decent for us next year. Not while Loki (AKA Doris) remains in charge, I think they might be cutting our strings.
