THE ORIONID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is entering a stream of debris from Halley's comet, source of the annual Orionid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak on Thursday morning, Oct. 21st. Interference from the Hunter's Moon will reduce visible meteor rates from the usual 20 to only 5 Orionids per hour.

THE SOLAR WIND IS COMING: A stream of fast-moving solar wind could hit Earth's magnetic field on Dec. 16. The gaseous material is flowing from a southern hole in the sun's atmosphere. Polar geomagnetic unrest and Arctic auroras are expected when the solar wind arrives.

CHRISTMAS GEOMAGNETIC STORMS: Multiple M-class solar flares this week have hurled at least two faint CMEs toward Earth. NOAA forecast models predict glancing blows on Dec. 23rd and 25th. The impacts, albeit weak, could combine to produce G1-class geomagnetic storms and high-latitude auroras.

CHANCE OF CHRISTMAS STORMS (UPDATED): Multiple M-class solar flares this week have hurled at least two faint CMEs toward Earth. NOAA forecast models predict glancing blows on Dec. 24th and 25th. The impacts, albeit weak, could combine to produce G1-class geomagnetic storms and high-latitude auroras during the Christmas holiday?

ARCTIC AURORA WATCH: A pair of minor solar wind streams is approaching Earth. ETA: Dec. 31st and Jan 3rd. Arctic sky watchers should be alert for auroras on those dates.

This looks useful to visualise where the aurora might be visible:

Useful one Jon.
I don't think the solar wind will be strong enough to show any visual aurora in northern Scotland this time Keith, but you never know!

Not Northern Lights, but this may interest one or two:

QUADRANTID METEOR SHOWER: Earth is approaching a stream of debris from comet fragment 2003 EH1, source of the annual Quadrantid meteor shower. Forecasters expect the shower to peak at 20:40 UTC (3:40 pm EST) on Jan. 3rd, producing more than 60 meteors/hour from a radiant near the North Star. The timing of the peak favors European and Asian observers, although late arriving Quadrantids could sprinkle North America as well. Wherever you live, be alert for meteors on Monday night.
