Timing holes in back plate look to to be aligned with both sprockets, I think I am going to presume all is ok and is normal to have different sounding exhausts

The only time mine has spit and popped and ran rough was when I had the belt slipped by one notch. Took it apart, realigned the belt and all runs well.


The light at the end of the tunnel is actually a train. 2019 M3W

This seems to be quite common on M3W's and has been mentioned on here before. The LH cyclinder seems to run with a steady beat but the RH one fluffs a bit. If you cup your hand over the end of the exhausts, at idle, you can usually feel the slight difference. It seems to be more pronounced with G56 exhausts. I wouldn't say it was a problem, more of a "feature". Not sure why they do this but the fuel maps for LH and RH (front and rear) cylinders are not exactly the same if you have a look on Protune 2.

As for the starting, a good quality battery, plenty listed in the Alternative Parts List, and good condition plugs and leads should improve matters but they rarely spring into life at the first touch of the button.

I have a 2015 M3W. The exhaust note on the right has never been as robust as the left as previously described. This has remained even with stage 2 cams, new cam belt, stage 2 ECU, Morgan Aero Racing Stage 1 exhaust pipes, and removing the anterior baffle and modifying the posterior baffle of the stock pipes. I too wondered what was wrong with my M3W when I noticed this. Now believe it must be a consequence of some engine design characteristic.

For starting in the very cold after a few days rest I did use a starter spray. (Many say that is a no-go)

Under standard conditions I always turned the key to the stage for fuel pump noise, turned back and repeated the procedure a second time before turning to start position. It helped a lot for better starting

Mine is slower to start when it has not been driven for more than about a week. My best guess would be the cause is the oil from the cold-sumping getting ingested into the cylinders on first turn-over. It always starts after 20 seconds or so, runs fine, and then re-starts quickly.

Changing to a battery with higher CCA than the factory Banner makes the starter motor turn over (and the engine start) noticeably faster.
