The new Banner battery has been connected for 4 days now and is still showing 12.6v.
Compared with the previous battery this is amazing.
I'll wait until it is down to 12.2v and then connect the trickle charger.

Assuming it's a smart, switchmode charger/conditioner I would leave it connected all the time the car is not in use Peter. This is their recommended mode of operation as suggested by LOTW. There is nothing to be gained but plenty to be lost by not using them in this fashion.

I've done so. Although the voltage hadn't dropped the charger said only 70% charged.

I wouldn't be too worried about the numbers Peter. Off charge voltage measured is a vague indication of state of charge at best given the variables of load and residual surface charge, and no indication of charge capacity.

That the charger is on and functioning is the only really valid concern. Extra charge can sometimes be added by re-cyling charger off/on which in turn forces it back into the higher voltage absorb from previous float mode, given the charger may drop into latter prematurely.

Richard,

Thanks: battery charging is a bit of a mystery to me... so I bought an EV...... banghead
I have a "Ring" brand charger, this one..
https://www.ringautomotive.com/en/product/RSC612
I keep it on the maintenance mode.

All I ask is that the battery works on demand...

Peter

Hi Peter, the following link is to the charger kit I use (and have done for many years) for each of my cars and motorcycles. I fit the "Quick connecter" lead to the battery terminals and leave my vehicles connected to the charge at all times unless I'm driving of course! These ctek conditioners check the condition and stay of the battery each time you re-connect them and they go through a process of assessment prior to commencing charging to ensure the correct amount of charge is applied and when. This process ensures that the battery's internal conditional is maximised at all times for performance and longevity. I highly recommend these units. I generally need the extension lead so that I can position the charger in the most ideal location for connection to the car. The connections are weather proof so I have one that is drilled through soffit of my garage to allow connection of the Range Rover which stays on the driveway.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Paul,
As long as the "Ring" charger is doing the job I'll keep using it, but at some point I think it might be worth getting a CTEK, I've never seen any real criticism of them.

They have a great reputation Peter but so do many others with equal or superior features, but costing less than half the price, Maypole for example.

Having looked at the spec of your Ring charger I would stick with it, especially given its up to 12 amp charge rating.

There are many purchases in life where price to diminishing returns can be justified, by those who wish for the best and can afford. IMHO smart battery chargers are not one of them though wink

I'd give another vote for the Maypole one. I've used 'Optimate' on the bikes for years but think the cheaper Maypole is far superior.
