You don't say what year your +8 is or what type of Dizzie you have, I assume it is an early +8 with a Mallory dual point dizzie? You could put in a Pertronix Ignitor with a Pertronix Coil, the Pertronix website is informative, a good timing light to set up the correct timing should set you straight.

As above we really need to know what year your car is and whether you have carbs or injection. The early cars had a single point lucas distributor which was acknowledged as a weak point even in the 60s/70s. Many converted to Mallory Dual contact , (expensive) or even Unalite (very expensive) but that meant replacing the whole unit. Pertronix was one solution that involved replacing just the breakers BUT as above you also need their coil. Not sure of the year , but eventually even Lucas did away with points and went electronic, again it was not a great system but generally thought to be "good enough". This was used on all the injection cars (13 CUX and 14CUX) right up to 2001/2 The last +8s (2001/2 onwards) used the GEMS system which did away with the distributor completely, the ecu handled the fuelling and ignition. There are various suppliers who can do a similar system for you eg https://www.lloydspecialistdevelopments.co.uk/products-upgrades/engine-management-kits/ at a price. Many speak very highly of these systems. They can be almost individually programmed, use 2 different maps for differing purposes, and will minimise both emissions and fuel consumption.

A conversion to a Ford EDIS worked a treat an E-type for me a few years ago. Fully electronic and eliminates the dizzy completely.

I have used the 123 distributor and ignition. It works super well and reliable. Has a handy app which exports all relevant engine data to your phone.

I’m in the process of installing 2x VW 4 cylinder spark modules working off a timing wheel instead of the distributor just the finishing touches to do - hope to finish this weekend

Smudger, what type of ecu are you using to control the timing?

It’s using MegaSquirt, things haven’t gone to plan this week so I haven’t had as much time with car as I expected , however I’m hoping to install the static map , then the dynamic map followed by a session on a rolling road, 2 maps one track & one MOT/economy
