I would not describe it as conspiracy as much as highly selective marketing to a chosen political (manufacturing and kyoto signalling) agenda?

Don't forget the tax gained on a new car is proportional to cost.
Having a tax saving on the purchase to promote new purchases brings more money not less as well as driving revenue.

Rather than opinion pieces published by journalists, it might be better to look at proper studies backed by factual data, like this one from Yale:

https://environment.yale.edu/news/a...ower-carbon-emissions-through-additional

Electric vehicles really are cleaner than ICE.

In 2017, I replaced my Porsche 911 Turbo S with a 2018 Model Porsche Panamera 4 e-Hybrid. During the winter months, I was filling up my 911 about every three weeks. I am retired and don't use the car that much in winter months. Since changing to the e-Hybrid, where I charge every night on cheap rate electricity, I fill up about every 2½ months, as I can do the majority of my shorter winter journeys on battery. A full charge costs me around £2.00 for a winter range of about 22 miles. I would therefore say that the plug in hybrid has substantially reduced my consumption of hydrocarbons. On the downside, I don't enjoy driving the Panamera as much as I did the 911. It is fast enough (4.2 secs 0-60mph) but it is very large and feels quite heavy. However I have my G56 stage 2 M3W in France and a 1977 3.3L 911 RSR in the UK, as fun cars when needed.

The plug in hybrid version of Sportages I looked at was my preference. A little over 30 miles range on pure EV before ICE kicked in. This means our pattern of mileages falls within that range so not a lot of petrol top up needed. The most frequent longer distance is 60 miles each way so about 25% powered by battery. I’ll be doing a cost comparison using electric versus petrol on estimated mileage and distances for guidance on the fuel cost aspect of ownership. The tax/service/ will be lower than ICE ( probably) but higher purchase cost and charging point installation will be the main cost factor.
I won’t be selling my Plus 8 ! I mean, you have to get some fun in life.

As per a couple of other comments whilst you do need to take some opinions with a pinch of salt the key message is that to be truly environmentally sound the embedded cost to the environment of any solution must be considered against the target results and the unintended consequences - ideally mixed in with some global joined up thinking. Fingers crossed.

I can't help thinking that it's not generally a good idea to let Perfect be the enemy of Good.

"EVs are not completely environmentally clean so I'm going to continue to drive my 16mpg gas guzzler" is not a strong argument in the current circumstances, especially if one lives in an urban or suburban environment.

Hamwich - that was exactly my point about weighing up the various aspects against the target results - one of which is clearly local air quality in urban / suburban locations.

I don't disagree with that but the car companies & governments should tell the truth so we can make informed choices. They are not zero emission vehicles.

I saw a TV show two days ago on Cobalt mining in Congo. The conditions the poor people live in is absolutely appalling I felt so guilty just owning a mobile phone let alone considering buying a Tesla.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_V3bIzNX4co

I don't understand why we can't pay Congo a decent amount for their raw materials and then pay the right price for the end products, if it means a Tesla is not affordable then tough luck to Tesla. I know Australia has Cobalt mines but I bet the salary paid to the Australian Workers is fair and I bet they don't get put in as much danger as this report shows.

But I know from TV shows in the past that petrol companies are also very evil, rather destroying a village and the people living there than paying a reasonable price for the oil. Again I feel we are not paying for the people who need the money what they deserve, just paying huge international companies money for profit they don't deserve.

I guess both ICE and EV are evil but the question is what is the least evil.

I do feel like some others here that a Hybrid is the best option. It means being able to drive around the city without producing ICE pollution but still being able to go on a trip. But it means not having such a huge battery just to get a decent range from an EV that is only needed a few times a year for trips.
