Got it - I needed 2 extra weetabix - locking plier did the trick - thanks !

For future reference, you need to press on the head of the pin from behind the backplate while using the Girling tool (similar to the one you purchased) to compress the spring whilst twisting 90 degrees.
I have 2 different sizes of the Girling tool, the version for the Morgan and the apparently more common, smaller one, I used on Hillman Imps.

Bit of a thread resurrection, but it might help someone doing the earlier Salisbury axle brakes. I came to do the biennial brake fluid replacement on my 4/4 and discovered the fluid level had dropped over the year. A brief investigation showed that (no surprise) that the rear brake cylinders had been weeping for some time. No worries, bung in a new set of cylinders, not an awful job.

When I came to remove the old ones, I found the middle clip on the driver's side was missing. The brakes had been working fine and I'd not noticed it, my guess is that when they were last installed the clip hadn't been driven in far enough for the protrusions on the lower clip had engaged. So I double-checked with the new clips that they fitted cleanly, a couple of strokes with a file ensured they would clip together neatly.

The 'correct' (at least, the way I did it) is Wheel cylinder in, upper and lower clips in, handbrake arm in, and as Arwyn says, middle clip in last of all.
