150 miles yesterday to North Weald for a high (ish) speed handling training session today.
It was 4 to 1 with an instructor on various marked out bends and braking areas to push the car to the limit (and beyond) in the relatively safe environment of an open airfield
I was a bit intimidated when I got there and saw the other cars booked in with 2 specialist track day cars and an Audi Turbo engined Lotus Elise but the instructor very much made the point that you're not there to compete with the other cars but to explore the limits of your own car.
Well I found the limit several times, i.e. I spun it, but was very pleasantly surprised that the Lotus' turn in speed was only about 10mph faster than the Roadster before it too spun out.
Great fun and incredibly instructive. I would never have believed how fast you can turn a Morgan into a bend and not lose control simply by following instructions and staying relaxed on the controls i.e. soft hands and not gripping the wheel with fear.
I won't be driving any faster on the road but I will be less likely to panic next time a blind bend tightens up on me.
Also some great instruction on the effects of trail braking and braking hard mid corner.
Probably pushed the car a bit more than I was comfortable with but she held up well. Lots of blue smoke at times and the outer edges of the tyres look a bit ragged now but all in a days work as they say.
Thoroughly recommend it provided you're not too precious with your car.
