Whilst digging around under the boot liner I saw an electrical connection on what I beleive to be the fuel pump which had nothing plugged into it. And also what seems to be a small pipe connection next to it! Is this important? If so what is it please?

That is a redundant connector on a replacement fuel pump. It would have been the connection to a fuel level float which has been removed.
There is normally a cover encasing the top of the pump and electrical connector, the fuel pipes come out of the side of said cover, you seem to be missing this.

Its really dirty back there. It's like you have a wheel just a few inches from that area kicking up a lot of dirt or something.

Yes it does along with lengthening the rear of the mudguard down to be level with the bottom of the bodywork.

Until this occaision I had never removed teh boot liner. I was actually expecting worse than I saw so a clean up is not going to be that arduous.

Since it was such a pain to get off I suspect the previous owner or mechanic left it off.

It come into two pieces.

Stephen, the first looks like the 'before' fuel pump' replacement photo! I was careful when separating mine but nice to know there's a replacement option. Has this been added to the Alternate Parts list yet
