I also got caught in Dorset, a few years ago, whilst I was still working.
Driving east between Dorchester and Bournemouth, I noticed a patrol car following.
Sticking strictly (or so I thought) to the speed limit, I was surprised when the patrol car overtook and pulled me over.

“Good morning Sir. Do you know why we’ve stopped you?”

No

“What speed were you doing?”

Just below 50.

“That’s why we stopped you. It’s a 40 limit.”
swear

I attended the excellent driver awareness course at Winfrith.
However, I did note that between entering Dorset at Lyme Regis and getting to Winfrith (about 30 miles), the speed limit changed 18 times, with varying signage!!
I, politely, pointed this out on the course and was told that all the signage complied with the legislation in place, at the time of installation!

No excuse, but the signage on the A35 and A31 is a mess and the location of the speed limit areas seem to be regularly altered.
In particular beware the village of Chideock on the A35 westbound.
There is a steep hill leaving the village, which has an uphill second traffic lane.
However, it remains a 30 mph limit all the way up the hill, so don’t be tempted to enthusiastically pop past that lorry.

I live where Wiltshire, Dorset and Hampshire meet. Dorset is VERY strict on speed limit enforcement, particularly on urban dual carriageways where the speed limit is often less than might be assumed and I'm always careful: WAZE is always useful when in the Morgan as it does seem to accurately know the limits. Hampshire is less strict, but not much. Wiltshire? They only seem to enforce 30mph limits and have no cameras or mobile speed monitoring.

I got one some years ago (speed awareness course) and it was superb.

The presenter made me think, and established his credibility, when he said ‘most people on these courses have not been caught speeding in the traditional sense that we all think of, they have been caught for not slowing down quickly enough’.

He went on to clarify saying when looking at the specifics of many cases a very high number of motorists are bowling along for example around the 50MPH limit and see a 30MPH sign ahead and fail to start slowing early enough. Most of us lift at the 30 sign rather than reducing our speed so we are doing 30 when we pass it.

Exactly how I was caught! Van was just around the corner and pinged me, no argument.

"‘most people on these courses have not been caught speeding in the traditional sense that we all think of, they have been caught for not slowing down quickly enough’."

brilliant line.
