Real long shot, but do you have another coil hanging about ?.... I have heard of a weak coil causing plugs to spark in the open air but not under cylinder conditions ..... exceeding rare but then so is an engine with everything working defying a decent mechanic for three days.

K Mark's already tried a different coil and ballast. Very frustrating! Just to update, it does have a ballast resistor but I have even tried another ballast resistor and coil - nothing changes

Yep, correct TBM ..... missed that bit ..... Mark ...Can we confirm that the rockers are going up and down and you can hear the compression whoosh with the plugs out?

Tried new coil and ballast resistor, no different. did a compression test, all cylinders good. I will try a live feed to the ballast resistor in the morning, but I have checked with a voltmeter before and that was ok

After the rebuild of a MINI engine I fitted the distribur (I hope it‘s right) in a wrong way, or better the driver for it. So the spark fires, but it fires in lower deadend, not the topend point. It took a long time to find the mistake.
Another time we changed the leads. Only changing one hole to the right. The same result- firing in the lower deadend.
Sorry about my bad English, but I hope someone understands and can translate it in the right way.

And the Xflow has an unusual firing order - 1243 (anticlockwise)

How old is the fuel? Fuel goes off so quickly these days - if it is old wonder if it may be soaking the plugs and preventing the easystart from catching?
(throwing everything at the wall in the hope that something sticks!)

Perhaps suspect fuel...?
OK so it does not even run on easy start.... perhaps the plugs were soaked before the last attempt with easy start which may explain that phenomena.. If you dry the plugs then squirt the easy start, that might cancel out that line of thought..? Keep with the programme TBM... I am looking forward to the resolution of this one..

Mark .... if it has compression and spark then, beyond something truly bizarre like the packing in your silencer collapsing and blocking the exhaust (even then you'd expect some flutter out of the easystart) .... my money would still be on timing as it should do something on easystart under those circumstances.... totally frustrating for you .... as above, I'll be interested to see what the problem is when you triumph over the cast-iron demon.

Things I have tried this morning * Wired the coil direct to the battery * fitted plug leads 180 degrees out * moved leads on one way anti clockwise All again nothing, not even fired since Monday As far as fuel is concerned,I have put new fuel in but the fact that will not even fire on Easystart suggests that fuel is not a factor. There is a spark at the end of the plug leads, the only thing I can’t check is the spark at the plug under load, but plugs are good and that I have tried a known spare coil and ballast resistor, suggests this is not the problem, again still at a loss as to why it won’t even fire.
