Hello everyone, after we drove the first 150 km with our 1972 4/4, I noticed that there is a clicking noise in the area of the rear left wheel suspension when there are load changes from acceleration and deceleration. The noise also sometimes occurs when I brake. As a layman, I would guess that the tolerances in the drive shaft area are too great. Do you have any experiences or tips for me in this area?
Greetings, Markus

I would check the tightness of your wheels if you have splines, loose wheel nut or worn splines will give this sound. Also check for wheel bearing play with that wheel in the air on the jack but make sure the wheel nut is tight and there is no play in the splines first. These are more likely than a worn drive shaft I think but you never know.

Hello Markus, Also worth checking your rear brake cylinder has not seized/sticking and the shoes are dragging. If you have wires it can cause a clicking noise from any clearance in the splines and the spinner will be warm after a run.

Remove wheel, clean splines and mating surfaces on stub axle and wheel. Liberally apply fresh grease to splines and in particular the conical mating surfaces.

Suggest checking propshaft universal joints and play in the differential as well Markus.
Jack up rear of car one side at a time and with handbrake off turn the jacked rear wheel each way whilst listening/ feeling for play.
With both rear wheels off the ground and on axle stands try turning propshaft whilst looking for play in joints.

Check the suspension hange on the backplate of the brake drum. They can fail & the prop shaft can then hit the tunnel

Wires or disc wheels?
All my suggestions have been covered - my first check would be brakes (check to see if the brake cylinder can still slide), and wheel bearings (front and back - sometimes noises can be deceptive!)

Check leaf springs for a broken leaf.
Also check the axle u bolts - have been known to break or come loose.
