I do have fun with the better informed ones...

"Is it an old one or a new one?"

" It is an 85..."

Leaves them thinking - very likely they come to the conclusion "ok - so it is kind of inbetween...."

This sums up a sad thing (in my view) that has happened to our society. I used to visit clients in my Morgan(s) and the comments changed over the last few years from (previously) "what a beautiful old car" to "that's worth alot of money".
Makes me sad. Luckily, young lads of tenish who don't have the cost fixation yet, still say brilliant things as I go by.
Recently I heard one saying to his mum "but there must be a roof somewhere"...
Very young and very old, they are the true fans nowadays.

I get that, and then am met with genuine surprise when they find out they paid 50% more for their tintop econobox

I then point out the £500 car that I use for my daily driver. smile smile All about choices.

As I tinker with my Mog on the front drive (there is no barrier between the drive and pavement) I have numerous chats every day about her. Some know all about Morgans (they have appeared on telly a few times recently), others are genuinely interested to learn. Everyone from old boys, kids to the local smackheads. It can be a little frustrating at times if I'm in the middle of something tricky, but in the most I enjoy the conversation, and the attention the old girl gets.

Call it evolution if you will.... As a plain ordinary car nut for as long as I can remember I ended up nailing a rotten old 912 back together which then by way of aspects of it`s design encouraged me to wonder how much better a 911 might be, I stuck with those air cooled machines for a decade or more but the whole loadsamoney comic script eventually tarnished my enjoyment of what was a machine who`s quality engineering and performance well suited my ideals, until the attitudes of collective Neanderthals finally got to me.. I went back to m/cycling to cover fun mileages, until I came across a open topped Bentley being expertly piloted, which eventually led to me becoming the proud owner of my +8 Morgan and for many a year no doubt thought of a daft old man in a daft old car by the Neanderthals... To think I may now be envied or thought to be rich, in no way appeals... Hmm..?

Most people I find just appreciation the colour combination of my car, a few express surprise that Morgans made a 4 seater. The few more knowledgeable and therefore more engaging people will make reference to Sir John Harvey-Jones MBE Troubleshooter programme on Morgan, often questioning whether its still a decade lead time for delivery these days, they understand the chassis and wood frame construction. You can therefore image the surprise when you discuss the new models are built on an aluminium tub.

Young children are normally in awe of the car style and the shiny wire wheels and mine has now been photographed many times with young aspiring drivers at the wheel, often to the parent's (camera in hand) consternation and concern as the kids scrabble over the leather to get behind the wheel........

Besides receiving the usual compliments and questions the best one I had was when I had stopped at traffic lights in the +8. A car full of young ladies from a high school stopped alongside me, one young girl leaned out the window gazed up and the down car and then said to me "Love the car shame about the driver", the lights changed and they drove off.

This "that's worth a lot of money" thing is funny. A well-equipped new VW Golf, even below the GTI, is worth more than my 4/4. But nobody would say that about the VW Golf. Is this due to reports of vintage Bugatti auction proceeds?

My everyday car is a Dacia and I am completely satisfied with it...
