People forget or never knew that home assembly of a car avoided purchase tax. So Lotus, and Gilbern would send you a box of bits. I imagine Marcos and the other small manufacturers did the same, I just don't remember, but it was a huge saving.
A neighbour bought a new Gilbern Invader estate and built it in his garage. That's why twenty years later I had to have one.
The introduction of VAT in 1973 closed that opportunity. These were not Kit Cars as perceived by people today.
If somebody asks if you built it yourself, just say the kit comes with woodworking and metalworking tools, and the hardest part is shaping the wings and cowl over a sand bag.......
