Hello.
I have a +4 1991 and this morning after turning off the immobiliser (behind the passenger seat) tried to start the car. Normally starts first go. Now the lights and instruments all come on and the engine turns over but no start. Could it be an immobiliser problem?
Any help appreciated as I need to use the car v.soon.
Thanks. Robert

By the immobiliser behind the back seat do you mean the red key switch? On my 97 +4 I had to be careful sometimes it was not fully home. So check that first.

On my 97 +4 there was also an immobiliser which had a key fob. But that was the T16 engine.
The ECU also is very dependant on the manifold inlet pressure. Again I'm not sure about the M16 engine but on the T16 there is a vacuum pipe from the manifold to the ECU. Over time it rots & fails.

Try the fuel pump relay, Should be on the passenger side of the bulkhead

As per Simon , the fuel pump relay is the most likely culprit.

One way to check it is to listen for the pump "whirring" as it build up pressure in the fuel rail, and once done it will cut out , and the speedo needle will give a small "kick" . Once this is complete the car should fire.

Pull the steering column down to its lowest position, drop the dashboard and you should then see the 4 relays screwed to the bulkhead. From my (very fallible) memory it is the unit with a purple and black wire? They are standard Rover units and readily available from Land Rover specialists . Whilst sourcing one it is a good idea to get another as they can (and do) fail at the most inopportune times so a spare is well worthwhile. If you need to use the car before you can source a new relay I am told that you can remove the relay which is used for the immobiliser circuit to replace it , the immobiliser won't work of course, but it should indicate that this is indeed the source fo the problem.

Good luck

Also check the fuses they can fail with age.

Hi
Just wondering what the outcome was with the starting issue Robert?
I have a 1990 +4 with the M16 motor and having similar problem.
After a timing belt issue and replacing all the valves, just got everything reassembled, it started first up and took it for a short run with all OK then it just stopped and won't restart.
So far have replaced fuel and air filters and measured fuel flow at the filter. Seems to have good spark but won't fire? I have fuel relays on order but not due for a couple of weeks yet (postage to Oz).
Tomorrow I hope to try and find if there is pressure at the fuel rail. I haven't been able to find an inertia switch anywhere in the engine bay, under the dash or at the rear so not sure where it is or whether there is even one fitted?
Appreciate any thoughts / further suggestions.
Thanks.
Col.

I had this problem a few years ago and it was the crank position sensor had failed. A new one was about £15.Took about 10 mins to replace.
Good luck
