On my car the rear fog light only works on Dipped beam not Main. Mine is the same. I use it once a year at MOT time when I sit in the car and drive the switches and brakes, the lads at the local garage I use are built to last with giant feet.

Hi all
Thanks for your replies.
The wiring near the lamp turned out to be the problem. Almost certainly disturbed by me when cleaning the car
The bullet connecter was ok and had power to it, so it was the crimped connector not far from the lamp. Once reconnected, I happened to have some heat shrink to seal and Bob's your uncle! I should be safe to make an appointment for MOT next week.
Thanks again everyone for your helpful and encouraging replies.
David Stuart Mogdavid Great that all works fine now! Your information about the reason for the problem with your car will certainly help others in the future.

On my car the rear fog light only works on Dipped beam not Main. Cannot find any current legislation for the UK that requires this specifically. Following rear fog lights becoming mandatory in 1980 in the UK, various moves were made by manufacturers to ensure these high intensity lights were not accidentally left on, the current requirement of warning light on switch being not considered enough. Having them only allowed on with dip beam is contentious as there may be rare situations where both main beam and rear fog lights to benefit those following, improve safety. FWIW my 2018 car requires only that headlamps (dip or main) are on for rear fogs to function.

I just wish there was some form of technology that meant they woud only switch on if there were no vehicles behind you, and they switched off automatically once another car was close enough to be aware of your presence......
I do this 'manually' in fog, but so many just leave them on regardless of other road users.

+1 Indeed, caused by drivers with brain fog, because they are so accustomed to all this automated crap on modern tin tops so they don't pay attention anymore

The requirement for fogs to work only on main/dip was introduced to stop people leaving them on and dazzling following drivers, mainly in the wet. Kit cars would not pass the SVA/IVA certification if they didn’t self cancel on switching off main/dip. As for bullet connectors... I replaced mine on the front under wing areas as they are massively exposed and prone to seizing up/ deteriorating. I had a front side light failure due to a badly affected bullet connection. Replaced with spade connectors and shrink fit tubing for sealing off.

Typing of dazziling drivers in the wet, does that include all those who seem not to use the handbrake when stopped at lights, perhaps many of whome may be driving automatics and in gear..Yeah, definately in a grumpy mood this morning..

Following on from some comments about whether the rear fog lamp only works with main or dipped beam, I discovered today that my rear fog lamp works when any lights are on, main, dipped or side. When the light switch is completely off, the rear fog then stops working. I don't know the regulations for a 1996 car but I imagine it will get through the MOT next week.
