Morning, was out in my 1997 4/4 today with about quarter of a tank of petrol and the fuel pump became noisy making a humming noise and following on from this a short while later the car started to misfire first of all a couple of times then back to normal but then started to do it more frequently to the point of cutting out and at other times getting a surge in power. Then a little while later it goes back to running normally with no problems!!
Would the fuel pump be on its way out or any other ideas what might be th problem?

Crap in the tank or the gauge is not so accurate & at times the pump was sucking air. When was the filter changed.? Could also be old fuel with these days water on the surface due to EtOh in fuels. Do you use it regularly? I would fill the tank & see if that helps then go on a long drive.

1/4 of a tank is well within the error margin of a Morgan fuel gauge.

Yep, as John and Paul have already said, give it a fresh tankful and take it for an Italian tune up. I'd put in 98 Octane E5 as well.

Yep used on regular basis, two hours there and back drive down to Rye yesterday and went fine. Its very frustrating when I take it to a dealer to investigate it runs fine and the can't replicate the fault, but it has been doing it on and off for a while now.

Stick some Stabil in it incase it a gumming EtOh issue

Also check the wiring to the fuel pump. On my '93 the pump is external to the tank. Went through a period of occasional power loss and once a rather massive backfire, eventually lost all power. Connection to fuel pump found to be poor.

One further thought. Does a car of this vintage have an emissions control feature controlled by the brake pedal?

I vaguely remember a 2012 4/4 (Heinz ?) with an issue similar to this one. IIRC, it transpired that a faulty limit switch was confusing the ECU.

I think some had a dedicated earth, as always on a Mog the earth may be the cause
