I worked for many years in the U.S. cotton industry (growing/marketing mostly, but also textile manufacturing). This time of year you need high average day and night temperatures, or you'll pretty much not get a good yield (cotton is a desert plant). So being in central California in July/August could get a bit toasty. The difference I suppose is that we don't have many cotton farmers here in the New Forest, so we do go a bit crazy in the heat.

(And if you fancy having a go, see https://www.hunker.com/12459242/what-kind-of-climate-does-the-cotton-plant-require).

Enjoy your warmer days.

I am with you Richard, after a working career mostly in the tropics my old body is enjoying this heat.... The newspapers and BBC always seem to overplay everything now... its nuts. I remember undertaking a 6 week drydock in Singapore with zero aircon in the ship, it was way above 45 deg in the engine room through the day, we cycled our work crews and regulary checked eveyone, making sure they cooled down and were hydrated, with regular changes of clean cotton coveralls.. The biggest issue was European types suffering the dreaded pricky heat rash... Heat in the tropics is managed!... In the UK the world is going to end when it goes above 30 deg C.!!

That's really interesting Dave, it must have been a killer down below at those working temperatures and I don't suppose the present day Graduates would cope.

Strange enough the most uncomfortable place I ever worked overseas was on Wolfe Island with high temps but the humidity was unbelievable it made Dubai seem like a holiday resort wink , I swear I didn't feel dry for three months.
We had to walk three miles to the shop and return carrying it all as the shore gravel road had been washed out by an earlier hurricane, you just get on with it and look back with fond memories.
The diesel was dropped in nets slung under a Jetranger, so they got their priorities right.

It was one big adventure at twenty one and my first overseas contract and acting all grown up in charge.

Just noticed, good luck with your Plus Six, I hope it's not long now. Amazing flying machines thumbs

Currently a cool 23° in Aberdeenshire compared to a high of 29° yesterday. It is forecast to get hotter towards 5pm though.
I think the big difference between the UK and other warmer countries is they are used to the heat, they expect it and act accordingly. Here, if the media don't warn the "mad dogs and Englishman" not to go out then they (the media) will be somehow responsible for the mass sunburn, fainting and death!!! exting

Our thermometer in the garden maxed out earlier today (albeit in direct sunlight). First time we've ever seen it go up to it's limit of 50 degrees. Dropped a bit now it's in the shade, but still registering over 40.

Thunder started here at 3:25pm and it's now raining heavily.

Here in South Nottinghamshire it is 39 degrees in the shade. Just returned from checking our horses. Gave them some more "ice lollies" and topped up their water. Teddy need 4.5 gallons to replenish his - that is since 11:00 am when the farrier left. Glad we went to check, he would not have lasted out until 8pm on what he had left.

Farrier arrived at 09:00 and left at 11:00 - two sets of shoes hot fitted. He hardly broke into a sweat - must be a lot fitter than me. He told us that he had re-planned his day and started at 06:00am aiming to finish before the worst of the heat. Sadly Mrs Farrier has taken the opportunity to impose a jobs list on him. All he seems to have achieved is an extra 3 hours on his working day.

My solar batteries ordered in Oct 21 were due for installation (this was the 4th date) on Friday but they have cancelled again!! This time it seems they are in customs.
Anyway I reckon till they arrive there will be sun & no rain in Suffolk.

I know this is of no concern to you "Otter than the Chippies Frier" folk in good old Blighty, but we are into our third week of temperatures ranging from 35C to 42C and that is at 8600ft above sea level. We always have late afternoon thunderstorms that drop the temperature into the mid to high 20Cs and it drops further to around 16C at night, not long till the first snows arrive in October.

We were married in June of 1988, and went to Puerto Rico for our honeymoon. It was brutally hot and humid. I was sweating like a pig until I realized that everyone moves slowly. Once I slowed down things were much better for me.

Good luck!

Nothing whatsoever to do with the thread Bruce but I thought this was a good step in the right direction. All local reports are very positive in town thumbs
