Our 1973 +8 RHD has the original 4-speed Rover gearbox. It works ok, not noisy, not very precise by modern standards, but certainly better than the Moss box in a 1964 Jag E we used to own. As we acquired the car recently I woud like to change the oil. But question is what to use? The Owners manual specifies 20W/50 or 10W/40 engine oil, but I think I read somewhere that a 80 or 85 mineral GL-4 transmission oil is preferred. Any advise would be much appreciated. Cheers /Finn

This one I found quoted on this page.. which seems more appropriate. My Rover gearboxed cars were 1990's and fitted with the 5 speed R380 boxes so different ATF requirement.

car is a 91 Plus four. Over the winter, I changed the LT-77 oil to the Redline MTF. So far, so good. No noise and shifting seems fine. As mentioned before, it's also GL4 so shouldn't impact the metals. Also switch out the rearend with the Castrol EP-90. GL-4. No issues or noises.
I did inquire to the like of royal purple and lucas. Theirs were all GL-5 so they advised against it. At least they were honest.
