I do know to my cost that Humber Bridge ANPR works for him. Trouble is they take three days before your vehicle appears on their website to allow payment by which time I'd given up checking!

I think the reason why no one bothers enforcing the law is because the morgans, irrespective of age, all look vintage. If the licence number is anything other than standard, then most cops would assume its a vintage car and not bother you.

True, I spent many years operating mobile ANPR and I can confirm most systems rely on infra red picking up reflective plates and not black and white. I think toll bridges have someone monitoring CCTV for black and white plates that are then manually entered into the pay system.

I seem to remember reading quite some years back, that if found guilty of using illegal B&W plates, it can lead to loss of right to the reg number which they display...? Further to that it seems that some time in the more recent past it is a requirement for number plates to display the post code of the company who supplied the plates..I know of one person who was stopped by traffic and had the post code issue pointed out..!

All true there is a requirement for plates to have postcode of supplier and the BS number plus correct spacing. If you are reported to DVLA for number plate infringement 3 times they can cancel the plate if a personal plate and issue a date related or a Q plate. The offending plate will be added to the national ANPR database so a vehicle is more likely to be stopped after first offence.

And not forgetting there are different rules for Pre 1973, Pre 1980, Pre 2001 and Pre 2021 plates, just to confuse matters

Yep ... my '75 can legally carry a black/silver plate due to being registered historic in spite of being post reflective changeover .... that stopped as of 1980 so the rolling 40 year black plate stopped then .... '80 and up need reflectives.
