+1, Lionels tool strongly recommended. If one wants to avoid the socket and breaker bar, do as I did - got an ordinary 38 mm spanner. Using an angle grinder I cut off the open end and ground the shaft down to make it a little lighter and neater. Due to the angle between the closed end and shaft of the spanner there is no problem even with the deeply recessed spinners on a Roadster. The shaft is still long enough to tighten the spinners properly. The removal tool lives happily in a little cloth bag underneath the driver*s seat, the spanner between the seat and the propshaft tunnel. By the way, Lionel makes a version for three-eared spinners as well. The "Oldtimer" (common expression for a classic car in Germany, by the way) tool might be even more elegant, but the price is certainly not.

I use one of Lionels with a 3' breaker and because my nuts are so tight (no pun intended) i still find them hard to undo.

I just use the original lead mallet which came with the car, never had an issue with it.

If you are that cack handed you actually manage to damage a wheel spinner or wheel whilst changing it, are you actually safe to be on the road.

Changed a wheel on the side of the M5 once, all of 10 minutes work, much to the annoyance of the womble who turned up and wanted the car towed off the motorway

Someone else will know for sure, but I believe the rule is that you cannot change a wheel yourself on the hard shoulder, and must call for recovery?

Changing wheels on a motorway without a fend off is tantamount to attempted suicide. More people are killed on the hard shoulder than on the motorway itself. I've seen it, not pleasent cop

Highway code rule 277 says (in the context of driving on a motorway and having a breakdown and safely making onto the hard shoulder):

DO NOT attempt repairs on your vehicle

the assumption being that you have a working mobile phone, or can safely get to an emergency phone.

I have certainly changed a wheel on the M3 when I was much younger. But there are many things I did when I was younger that I would never do now.
