Driving home the other night the headlights were on. I could push the stalk forward or pull it towards me to get the brighter lights. Then the brighter lights only worked when I pulled the stalk. When I pushed forward there were no lights.
Stalk issue?

Looks like the stalk. Pulling it fully forward would be the momentary main beam flash.
There should be no separate dip or main beam fuse for that year. A blown filament would affect only one side of course.

Worth checking fuses because I think the main lighting and the flasher are on different ones??

K Not according to wiring diagrams for that year K. As I understand it dipped beam, which shares same fuse still works although one diagram for that year shows no headlamp fusing at all! Note that headlamp beam control stalks work in one of two ways Paul. Toggle or forwards and backwards. It confuses the hell out of me when I swap from Mini to Mog.

Richard ... indeed ... just my head skipping back to when 'Brights' in US Speak was Mains as opposed to Sides 🙂 .... thought Pauly meant he had no Mains other than when using the flasher.

Similar happened to me a few years ago - a new stalk/switch cured it.

Yep, classic symptoms of the early Lucas type stalk failure, the flash will work as it's rarely used whereas the full beam locked on function will have gradually burnt out / worn away the little copper contact or wiper

Talk about language confusion. When you say flash, I think of the hazards. And I can't keep straight if dip is high or low beam.

Replacement switch unfortunately unless you can clean the dip/main beam contacts
Original one is Ford Transit Mk1 with a bit of bending- but they are a bit thin on the ground now - I think repro ones are available but at a cost!!
Used to have a few spare but sold them all now

When you do source a replacement column switch, do yourself a massive favour and fit a set of relays to the headlamp wires. That way you prevent the switch from having to carry the full current through some very small contact surfaces and will save the switch from burning out again.
