A very pleasant rural drive home from near Rutland Water where we celebrated our 42nd wedding anniversary at Barnsdale Lodge Hotel last night.

235 rather dull miles from Vannes to St Georges de Didonne on the northern tip of the Gironde. TomTom's route planner took us on some truly dreadful roads (if one could call them that - some were tracks with sump and crossmember-grinding ridges; even the metalled ones were hideously bumpy). Note to self - take care when selecting the Thrill route option.

A mixed yesterday starting with a couple of us visiting the eye watering collection of bikes at Made in Italy's factory unit in Stowmarket.

Probably my favourite road going DucatI although they have a huge range of standard, modified and full race bikes of the marque.

Plenty of Moto Guzzi's as well including this 1937 500 GTS with Carlo's classic original design inlet over exhaust engine.

Then spirited drive over to Hadleigh where we met Mr and Mrs John V6 for pub lunch followed by piano recital at local church. The cross country route back home was interesting too with the Google lady yelling out often unexpected instructions until we finally hit a familiar road. Spoilt only by an artic truck driver appearing on a slight bend two feet onto my side of the road scared

Richard, it was a fun day out. The boss wouldn't have appreciated me looking & lusting in that bike shop again. Far too tempting. We went back via Flatford , Manningtree & the Royal Hospital School enjoying the twisties. The trucks are back on the A14 though now the docks are open.

Right thread this time. 221 miles from Beguey to Beire. Much better, faster roads through woodland followed by what seemed like several hundred hairpins along the Roncesvalles Pass. Everything green on the French side of the Pyrenees; on the other side, the landscape was mostly the colour of straw.

At Roncesvalles
