A few years ago our new king visited the Morgan factory in Malvern as Prince of wales and was photographed driving a Plus 4. But his interest in Morgans stretches further back than this official engagement. In 1969 he asked for the new Plus 8 to be demonstrated to him at Windsor Castle. The factory sent him one to try out. He apparently liked it very much but his security detail said there was no way that he could have one as it was too much of a security risk. Poor Charles, deprived of the delights of Morgan ownership.

I think some similar restriction was placed on him after he flew the Richard Noble inspired ARV Super 2 two seat aircraft built on the IOW.



Probably just as well as the Hewland three cylinder two stroke engine had a propensity for oiling plugs leading to a swift return to the airfield.

On a later visit fairly recently he was shown punching louvres into a bonnet on the press.
I wonder what happened to that bonnet?
Anyway, can we claim that louvres are “By Royal Appointment”?

I heard a slightly different side of this story. I think it was John Britten who claimed that he took a +8 to Windsor Castle for the then Prince to try out. Although it was reported that he enjoyed driving it , and liked the car , he had already acquired his Aston Martin DB4 (or was it a 5?) and thought that one British sports car was sufficient.

Either way the story is intriguing, and who knows what would have come to pass if he had made a purchase.

I wonder if anyone who was present at that demonstration (from MMC/John Britten?) is still around to verify the account.
