When I worked in Canada there was a plug in the front of the car which had a heater in the sump you plugged into the 110volt supply overnight.. In Norway every car has a 230V heater. I tried a long time to find such heater that I coult make fitting to my CX500. Like this one. Ah, that's a version I didn't know. The problem was finding a mounting point on our motorbike engine. The engine housing and the cylinders are one unit. Anyway, I'm too old now to go to Norween in the winter with the motorbike/ sidecar...

How nice to see this thread stimulate a flutter of nostalgia for the “ good old days of motoring” 🤣
What I found interesting about my experience was the fact that in ten years of Morgan driving this has been a one-off and even when I cast my mind back to driving my Morris 1000 convertible from Liverpool to Newcastle, in winter over the Pennines, never once!
On this recent trip in the Morgan I think it was a “perfect storm” of conditions and not the cold morning per se. I was probably giving it a bit more “wellie” than usual and for longer (as we were on a mission to meet up with more Morgan’s for a day run) and relative humidity was approx 80% undoubtedly played a part.
Anyway, the experience is filed away for future reference🤣 Cheers, Neil.

I had a '37 Y model Ford that I made an ally shield shape cover that fitted completely over the grill in winter.

My mini back in the 60s running 1.5 inch SU used to ice up. Fitted a water heated inlet manifold.

When I was about 18 and driving a Sunbeam Rapier which had no garage I used to leave a small parafin lamp thing under the engine in winter. Anyone remember those? Yep, as my previous post Remember when folk used to tie a piece of cardboard over part of the front grille in winter ?
We even had a sort of shallow drum paraffin heater that you lit overnight and shoved under the engine Ahh..you caught me sleeping at the back! Keep a look out for the flying blackboard rubber next time you nod off

I've just picked this thread up... gosh, memories...
The worst car for icing was the Hillman Imp, both carburettor and driver! It was essential to jeep varying the revs by changing gear. With the endine at the back and the so called heater at the front it was impossible to get the car warm. A car rug for the passengers legs, gloves and a hat too. The Ford Prefect didn't have a heater at all, the tyres were virtually free of any grip in the cold, I used to be able to do a low speed 360 on any iron manhole cover...
Today we are spoilt, even in a Morgan....

You forgot the vacuum powered wipers driven by the manifold that went slower the faster the car went ... they were on the Prefect with running boards but not sure about the later 'boxy' ones 😁

Reading an old issue of Classic & Sportscar yesterday and there was a reference to Carburettor Icing. The author attributed this to having recently had to fill the vehicle with E10. He ws hoping that reverting to E5 petrol would resolve the issue.
What does the team think ?

Makes sense. EtOh evaporates at a lower temperature than petrol. Plus ethanol in fuels increases the amount of moisture in the fuel over time.
