Bob ... I guess as England has no dedicated Parliament then Westminster passes UK law which gets varied by the devolved Governments for their jurisdictions leaving it applicable only in England. Don't think it's a reflection on their constitutional status.

Watching this thread as I have a cheap and cheerful metal detector that's decades old and really only good for finding lost keys in the garden ... I've got 75 acres to mess about in and according to the older OS maps there's been bronze age finds in the general locality.

When I was a kid we had a 3 year stint in England when I was about 10 we lived near an old Roman road near Hurst Green in Sussex. On the property at the peak of the hill was a roughly square earth platform which we always thought could have been a fortification, probably with a wooden palisade. At some point I found a circular iron object of about 6" diameter which I insisted, in my childhood fantasy, was a shield boss.
My parents, on the other hand, thought it was a bit that had fallen off some agricultural equipment.
About 30 years later my mother visited a museum in England and was astonished to see an object similar to the one that I had found and that was classified as a Roman shield boss. Mine was undoubtedly left behind or thrown away when we returned to Australia frown

It was similar to this below but showing lot more rust

The find was in Yorkshire, so the UK law applies.

So, we're not in the UK? confused2

There is a 'report a problem' tab at the bottom of the GOV.UK webpage.

I have just finished filling in my self-employed tax return, so I think I've had enough GOV.UK for a while!!!
