Surely much easier to pull 'em for illegal number plates, fine & cancel fancy plate they paid for...I can count numerous ones every time I'm out

I don't think it will apply to V engines.

With standard exhausts the Plus 8 "just" passed the test at Castle Combe. But that was in standard mode and not moving. When driving in Sport Mode it is a lot noisier and has pops and bangs.
It is my understanding that a vehicle has to meet the dB value on the V5, or its homologated reading. Over the years permitted levels have reduced, so older cars can be louder.
And then there is the MOT. As has been said, measuring a bike noise level is well nigh impossible, I was once required by a nice Police Officer to get my Triumph Thruxton (with aftermarket exhausts) checked. The local MOT guy said "I'm somewhat deaf, but it sounds just right to me. He then told me that in becoming qualified as a MOT tester there is no specific hearing test and he never wore his hearing aids to work....

Think this will blow over when it really gets looked at ... from race meetings, where you get checked every morning before the meeting starts and if you seem dodgy, any time the clerk fancies ... the parameters for doing a noise check that will stand up even in those tightly controlled circumstances are detailed. How you arrange that in the wild in a way to stand up in court probably only exists as a dream of those hoping to make a mint out of selling the equipment.

John .... 'pops and bangs' ..... by their uncontrolled nature I can't say I've heard any 'quiet' ones! 🙂

Pops & bangs if quiet enough aren't illegal

We have an annoying local lad with a tweaked up old Golf. He must burn more fuel on the pops, bangs and crackles than pushing the car forwards. You can here him coming from next village. A good candidate for above.

It would be improper of me to suggest that these oversized exhausts can have a large volume, you can work out what it is by filling it with packing peanuts......they slide in easily.

Re pops and bangs....in the late 60's we used to turn off the engine whilst doing, say, 30 mph, wait a couple of seconds and turn back on again. This would result in an explosion in the exhaust. Whilst it was great fun under a bridge and similar, it sometimes used to blow a hole in the silencer.
Have they worked out a way to produce these pops and bangs without damaging the cats etc.?

IIRC all new cars must comply to 82 db. Most police forces use 90 db as the prosecution threshold this is tested at 50% of max revs in an open area.
