I had the same issue, it doesn’t have a positive release location. I found that “jiggling it” when the tab is in the open position does the trick.

I am posting these photos for Andy. It does look a bit Mickey Mouse to me.
He told me:-

"Hi John,

Here is the photograph and the diagram extracted from the manual. Photograph shows how mine looks when trying to open it. The diagram from the manual shows how it should look.

A picture paints a thousand words and al that!!

Cheers,

Andy"

I have a late Trad Roadster fitted with this new type of fuel cap. I have had the same issues with mine not always locking shut. My dealer greased it and it's generally better now, but not perfect.

Try some silicone grease on the inner plastic parts that rotate against each other & wipe a thin layer inside the filler socket too, I have to do the Roadster every 6 months or so

Good evening.
I am having the same or similar problem.
In the petrol station today wondering if I can fill her up!
Jiggling works but not really sure what is happening!

Let's face it, it is just a poor piece of design.

I did investigate converting mine to a Monza style filler only to discover the same pressed steel tab arrangement hiding underneath the Monza outer cap!

Check that in refitting the retaining cable is aligned so that it retracts through the breather holes properly - if not it fouls the housing of the cap making it difficult to open. The breather plate rotates - on mine the cable needs to be in the six o’clock position to slide away easily.

Had lunch today with a few members of the Morgan Sports Car Club and it appears most CX chassis owners have trouble with the filler cap. My table chum told me there is a factory crude fix, in that part of the metal inside the cap is removed. He has had no subsequent problems.
