There must be something inside the cocoa tin. It is too big for a few transistors.

Pertronix - the name just reappeared on another forum - wonder if it's one of those?

Cheers,

I had a Pertronix system on a V8 Daimler, everything was inside the distributer cap.

Comment from a Mog pal in USA (who is also into Rileys and other classic cars, plus boat)

"I can see an old style Lucas windscreen wiper motor, some old plugs and the can. This appears to have three old transistor rectifiers in the top. Could be wired to convert AC current to DC. I have never seen that exact arrangement before."

Need to know what those wires lead to? The distributor? Alternator? etc.

Cheers,

Graham, the wires from the "can".. two go directly to the coil and the other one goes to the dist.

That confirms an ignition booster then.
Thanks Pat.

Passed your reply on Pat, with a suggestion that maybe it was home made, and another of the group came back with this:

"Yep, that's what it appears to be, a home made ignition booster, the 3 transistors are the guts of a DC voltage amplifying and refining circuit. Wish Fred Winterburn from Canada (ex eMog, on theMog Google Group sometimes) was here, he would know instantly what it is. Apparently his Dad originated a design for CD ignition and variants starting in the 50s, so he is real up on early high performance/solid state ignition systems..."

Cheers,
