What does a Chief of staff do in a company that from its last accounts only employs 214 people ?
I think you will find it's a case of one senior exec in and a number of others out or pushed to the departure lounge.....

The eyes and ears of the CEO on a daily basis, makes recommendations of who, what and why should go, stay or change. When the COS makes a statement about the family culture in the same sentence as technology and traditional crafts means that is what is being assessed for change and he will be the one who will instigate that. The Chief of Staff is usually the Chief Executioner allowing the CEO to avoid direct involvement and not take responsibility if things don't work out. The times they are a changing.

my excellent inter-personal skills, relationship management, my excellent inter-personal skills, relationship management, Streuth that’s put me off already. Quite so. How I detest this kind of management-speak BS. Of those people in life with whom I have crossed swords, one introduced himself as being a "Seagull Manager". He said: Seagull Managers fly in, make a lot of noise, cr*p on everyone, then fly out. Oh yes, how I hated that git. And I have always taken a keen interest in the "Peter Principle" (obviously -- even though that's the creator's surname). It states that individuals are promoted based on their success in previous jobs, until they reach a level at which they are no longer competent, as skills in one job do not necessarily translate to another. How true; MMC (oh and His Majesty's Government) beware.

Being promoted to your level of incompetence is abundant in the Civil Service and Whitehall.
