Ageless design, which has stood the test of time is the fundamental appeal of Morgan. Its primarily what makes people want one in the modern world when everything else is lardy and oversized.
MMC must be congratulated in retaining the essence of the Trad especially with the Plus Four.
I'm not so sure of the appeal in the sixties, when there were numerous capable alternative two seater sports cars on the market. With enough money I would have gone Elan or TVR back then.
Twenty years ago the Aero brought in a new demographic, as did the M3W more recently. The CX is now doing the same , but this time there is no Trad cushion ticking along in the background.
The new three wheeler will entice a few more new customers for sure. As will whatever Morgan does next. Interesting times.

IMHO they should have kept an affordable entry model like a 4/4 trad chassis.

Surely that would require 2 production lines instead of 1 for the CX range?

Yes but I suspect they will be shooting themselves in the foot. There are much better value cars in the price range they have moved into. I think they need to encourage buyers at entry level first.

IMHO they should have kept an affordable entry model like a 4/4 trad chassis. Totally agree. Lotus sold the rights to the Seven. The Seven survives, but Lotus has had periods of struggle. A small operation in a separate location could produce a limited run of Trads. There must be a small demand for a new bespoke Trad. Yes numbers are tiny but Caterham manages to prevail. A 4/4 with a number of engine options following the Caterham business plan might just work.

Agreed, basic design , limited electronics & fun to drive. Whilst affordable. Not everyone has £70k plus for what for many is a toy.

Dave, an interesting idea but I doubt II would sell the right to use the name and without it the value feels lessened sadly? Caterham have changed hands several times. One could argue the situation is somewhat different as it has always been "the same" car a bit like triggers broom. Tony Fernandes (Lotus F1 and other things - April 2011 and then again last year to the Japanese Importer and Racer - a good home? https://www.motorauthority.com/news/1131824_caterham-sold-to-vt-holdings I am uncertain if that was due to a liquidation issue in both cases.
Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.

With all the other overpriced, over designed, over complicated tat they're building you'd think there would be a slot in the production line for an entry level trad chassis car. I really believe that an 'entry level' car should have been kept in the range. It seems foolish to miss the opportunity to get buyers in to the brand at a more affordable level. Obviously 'affordability' is all relative. They are expensive and impractical toys. The usual buyers are middle aged/old men, pensioners who have wanted one for years. I guess that the Italians want a younger buyer. The newest 3 wheeler doesn't have a CX chassis and I can't believe it complies with whatever EU regulations led to the demise of the trad cars. I would buy a new trad, but sadly it'll probably never happen and if it did it would probably be humongously expensive!

I guess an 'entry level car' that no longer represented the rest of the range in dynamics could easily end up as a self-shot foot .... someone who may find the CX as their sort of car would likely find the trad crude and unsophisticated and therefore disappointing .... the trad commands loyalty for it's very crudeness and lack of sophistication (amongst those of us who value the simplicity and 'vintage feel' ) and those would be less likely to 'trade up' to a CX ... my guess the only buyers would be people who would stick with the 'entry level' trad cos they fell for it's charm and those wanting to replace their trad with a younger one ... neither of which would help CX sales .... more 'alternative' than an 'entry level'.
A true entry level Morgan for the current range would be a low-specced (rubber mats and vinyl) with a cheaper power train CX.
