Its not very' involving' when crawling in traffic jams in a manual gearbox car , continuously balancing the clutch on a hot summers day...its actually a ' pain in the butt' especially if you are tall and your lega and feet struggle for any room . It's a simple choice when it comes to a modern auto you can choose to use or leave the flappy paddles alone or not as the case maybe or just leave it in auto, but you have a choice. However, when it comes to a manual gearbox there is no choice whatsoever, it will always be a manual gearbox and all of its foibles. I've driven flappy paddle Ferrari's and a good old fashioned 330GT2+2 with its heavy clutch that needed thighs built like tree trunks and slow balky change especially when cold manual gearbox........I know which one I prefer every time and its not the 330.
I tend to agree. I have owned high performance manuals and high performance paddle shift autos. I can't really say a manual is genuinely 'more involving'. In a low powered car a manual is good for wringing out the last drop of performance, but in a high powered car, it's less relevant. Paddle shift boxes have also moved on a lot in the last few years and it's actually quite hard to find high performance cars with a manual shift. No car is "involving" when driving along in traffic jams or indeed on motorways and in cities. Thats not what a sports car is for and is to be avoided.Preferably by letting SWMBO drive whilst you nod off! Sports cars are for those days when you go somewhere for the pleasure of driving open roads, maybe with the top down, maybe in the early hours before traffic builds and the scamera vans are deployed. Driving without a destination even, which is why in my experience the sports cars, the toy cars, do small annual mileages. And personally having the option of either flappy paddles or manual, I get more enjoyment out of rowing a manual along than the paddles. The latter I always find simply end up not being used - where is the point in using the paddles when the software will make the change for you? Surely the electric car with no need for a gearbox is simply a further step down that road

Some folks may not have the wherewithal to own two cars yet are sports car enthusiasts, and therefore may have to press their sports car into duties for which it was never designed, and in that regard over many years of observation of the activities of Morgan owners, it seems they may be a tad creative in terms of the usage of their cars as mechanical donkeys...? (-: My 991`s purchase was "justified" to some degree as being a PDK, in that my good lady could drive it and as such it could act as a stand-in should the family barge be unavailable. When engaging in an early morning drive around the local countryside flappy paddles are very much in use to increase the level of driver involvement on a tight and twisting country road. However dependant on frame of mind and on the same road, sport mode can be deselected and the gear changes can be left to digital decision making should one wish to enter cruise mode for some reason, perhaps to take more time enjoy the scenery, or if one should catch up with traffic with no overtaking possibilities likely to present themselves for a few miles..? As for the digital decision making of a PDK box, I think it may learn driving style and dependant on programming may prioritise fuel consumption over performance to some degree unless taught otherwise...? Of course if one also perhaps have a manual Morgan available should one wish to crunch a few gears, such a situation would seem to present the best of both worlds..? I do see the 991.1 on as just another step in a process of of evolution/ conditioning owners towards an electric Porsche, given there is no sight of an engine available, other than the tail pipes and the noise and fumes they generate...Sigh..! Though in truth when I owned air cooled 911`s I ever thought the engine looked like the innards of a washing machine... it took time to gain a degree of appreciation for the contents of the 911 engine bay... Whereas the +8 ever impressed...

Surely the electric car with no need for a gearbox is simply a further step down that road The chap with the Kia EV6 was facing the same quandry. It's fast It costs little to run It does pretty much everything needed, dump run, parent, holiday, months shopping etc It has the charisma of a dead thing. He has now taken to calling it the Tarmac Electrolux. Horses for courses. He was coming from an E63 estate (older 2WD model) so it was a leap.

A few months into Boxster S ownership it is clear that porsche ownership is little different from my Morgan ownership experience. The cars have "issues", some simple, others complex. Mine is going in to the dealers later in the month to investigate a mysterious rattle that can be very noticeable on start up, it sounds like a car with out of gauge tappets. However sometimes the sound goes after a few seconds, other times in is constant. There are no warning messages, no impact on performance and the dealer has said that the car is safe to drive. It is covered by a Porsche warranty, so whatever it is the problem isn't mine. I get a loan car and the dealer is 1/3 the distance to my nearest Morgan dealer.

Hydraulic tappets? I use Awthan KH partly due to the lack of a courtesy car at KH.

Does the Boxster have a hydraulic timing chain tensioner? Or even a timing chain rather than a belt?

The Boxster has dual cam chains, one per bank, and hydraulic tappets. One issue that seems relatively common is the upper, inlet, tappets take time to refill.
Pork forums contain the same cross section of humanity as Morgan ones, but with many, many more excitable Americans....

A friend recently acquired a Porsche, not sure of model, but possibly a 911 or something like that. The gearbox developed a fault and he says that it is not possible to get gearbox parts separately…you have to have the whole gearbox @ £15k ! Luckily for him it’s a warranty job. Stick to the Mog I think!
