I had to get up in the morning at 10 o'clock at night, half an hour before I went to bed, drink a cup of sulphuric acid, work 29 hours a day down at t' mill, and pay t' mill owner for permission to come to work, and when we got home, our dad and our mother would kill us and dance about on our graves singing Hallelujah.

But you try and tell the young people today that.....................

Talking of todays pay for hard working youngsters I see Elon Musk is in court with shareholders defending his Tesla pay package that’s in the region of the current UK annual defence budget. Apparently the justification is “keeping him focussed on Tesla and not other pet projects.”
One guy….really?

There is NO WAY, I thought I was hard done by.

I was a teen when The World at War appeared on my parents TV.... Watching naked bodies being bulldozed into mass graves kinda causes a young mind to wake up to the realities of man`s inhumanity to his fellow man far more so than could a bored teacher trying to make the content of history books seem real...?

My grandfather, a ships engineer had a picture of his WW1 destroyer on the wall at his eye level next to his seat by the fire, he and my father like so many others of their generations that I worked with in time, never spoke of the wars. While in the slow process of dying from Cancer my dad would scare my mother when he sat bolt upright in his bed in the middle of the night shouting in German at the top of his voice...

Hard done by.... are we sleep walking through life....?

I suspect the programme you are referring to was actually the excellent All Our Yesterdays (The World At War didn't come on until 1973).

It was Brian Inglis and All Our Yesterdays that woke me to the reality of war. We would watch it every week (I think on a Sunday) and I used to think how lucky we were to be living in an age when such things couldn't happen anymore. I still remember the day when I asked my parents what was stopping world wars happening again? Even as the question left my lips the shocking reality hit me: nothing. I was probably about 7 or 8 years old, it haunted me for weeks afterwards.

Try not to compare that with a normal world, it will only disappoint you!

The valley has it's own rules for how things are done.
He has some unusual traits as a person, different but maybe not bad.
Paypal was a very early Unicorn (massive success that is rare to see)
He is wildly smart but has the social challenge of autism so has no filter which is what gets him in the do do.
Sadly he has little respect for any authourity even when it is to his own detriment.
He loves getting a rise out of people that annoy him.

One friend that worked for him left after two years, best comment was - Thank god I only worked there for ten years.

I admire much of his thinking but wish there was a musk muzzle that could be remotely applied to help him.

Same here. I am part of the luckiest generation ever. First generation of males who didn't have to go and fight a war. Rationing stopped before I was old enough to notice it. My parents loved each other and stayed together their whole lives giving me total security. My parents loved me and my siblings. Schooling and healthcare were excellent. More freedom as a child than you would dare offer a young one today (e.g I'm on the local common with an airgun trying to shoot squirrels as the local farmer paid for their tales). Chemistry powders freely available from the local shops for experimenting. The Beatles happened! Bought my first car aged 17. Went wherever I liked. Continental travel opening up. I was able to go into any career I liked. Able to start buying first house aged 22.
The list goes on forever.

Much, much harder for young ones before my time and now again.

I like to think Schooling is still pretty effective (but may be a little biaised) but my abortive attempts to get a doctors appointment today highlight the tragic decline of our healthcare system.

Apparently I can't book an appointment for a few days time, I can only get one on the day I call, and then I must call at 8.00am and get in the queue. I then have to be prepared to take whatever appointment they can offer me that day. I called at 9.00am this morning (as I was unaware of the 'process'). Thankfully they have a system that promises you a callback without changing your place in the queue. Finally got the call at 9.50am. No appointments left for the day.

I tried to explain that I was a teacher, can't use a phone in class, work an hours drive from the surgery, and am unable to leave a class of students unattended to drop everything for an appointment, but was politely told 'tough, phone tomorrow at 8.00am'.

Not entirely sure how I progress from here. If I don't post for a while I've probably died.

Find a better surgery. What they are putting you through is plain ridiculous Phil.

Two other NHS surgeries in the area, neither are taking on new patients who are already registered, only people new to the area. Probably as a result of a mass exodus of people from my surgery!

Same system up here at my surgery in the NE of Scotland ...... if you don't have your phone in your hand when they open you'll be out of luck.

It's no wonder the fallback is for people to drop themselves on A&E, which then fails to meet it's targets .... the root problem is the failure of the GP system .... no idea how it's allowed to operate as it does (though the fact they're private businesses only contracted to the NHS is a clue) ..... they'd be better cancelling the contracts and creating a large 'pool' of GPs under direct control at local hospitals where you will have the chance to book or just 'turn up and wait'.
