A friend of mine has the marine version of the Merlin mounted on a frame and starts it regularly, sounds wonderful.

When I used to live in Hertfordshire in the 1960s, I would often pass a house near Bentley Priory in Stanmore which had one in its front garden. I suppose they were still commonplace then.

I live a mile or two away from Bentley Priory and the Spitfire, which used to be at the entrance to Bentley Priory Airforce Base is now long gone regrettably. There are just ugly flats there now but the museum still survives and is worth a visit.

We had one in Worcester (Perdiswell) for a bit. It was borrowed for the Battle of Britain film and never returned. After a bit of time at the gates of various RAF stations, it's now hanging from the ceiling in a Glasgow Museum.

It was replaced by a Javelin, but that eventually went too, and is now in the Yorkshire Air Museum.

I remember seeing and hearing these flying at RAF Coltishall as a lad at their airshow days, very impressive in camouflage colours whilst the three V bombers were all in anti flash white but equally impressive and lovely looking aircraft all of them. The Javelin was designated an all weather night fighter I recall.
