In light of many recent experiences, I think the advice has to be 'don't risk it'.

So how many acute failures have there actualy been among members? All batteries fail at some point and I have experienced other well known brands fail in a relatively short time. Has there been any feedback from Exide?

i had an OEM battery fail that was probably a dying regulator. Regulator finally and i put in the Harley replacement and good voltage ever since. i replaced the battery with an AntiGravity battery and it works very well now.

From our small M3W community there have been at least ten Exide 12-31 failures that we know of. It is not a case of them getting old and slowly expiring but a quick and total failure and this failure mode has been only with these batteries. There were quite a few in use as the specification for them is pretty much ideal for the M3W, unfortunately the reliability isn't.

No feedback from Exide, most people are just pleased to get going again after being stranded at the side of the road to bother taking the dead battery back to Exide. If you have one of these batteries fitted I would say it would be wise to replace it sooner rather than later, unless you enjoy lengthy, unplanned stops and calling breakdown services.

I put an Exide AGM 12-31 on my 3 wheeler last December. Yesterday I tried to start it and it was completely flat despite the fact I had used the car only a few days before so should have been fine. Tried charging with my CTEK MXS 5 and it charged to step 5 then the fault light came on - cannot keep charge and may need to be replaced. Good job it was on my drive!

Jonathan G,

Sorry to hear you also have a failed Exide AGM battery - fortunately failed at home and did not leave you at the roadside!

I have finally managed to make contact with the manufacturer and Exide are now keen to analyse their AGM 12-31 batteries that have failed prematurely.
They are arranging to collect mine which failed after 18 months and have asked if there are others examples available?

Do you still have yours that Exide could collect to continue with their investigations?

Whilst writing if anyone else has an example of an Exide AGM 12-31 prematurely failed battery that they are willing to make available to Exide please post and I will happily coordinate with Exide.

Good work Bob. Let's hope that their investigations are thorough.
