Having spent 40 years running car transporters, and having seen the photo, my money is on an axle bearing failure, not the cars themselves.

Anything involving an EV is 'news' apparently. There are hundreds of car transporter fires, but these don't make the news, despite also closing roads.

Axle bearing failure... I saw that flair up on a petrol tanker while in the Clyde Tunnel.... I have to admit I fired out that tunnel exit rather quicker than the 30mph speed limit required..!

All Tarka's unplanned service issues have been electronic.... or wear and tear. So far, an after market warranty would have been pointless.

Peter, I extend my porsche warranty every two years.

As I plan to do. So far I'm very happy with the car, it has "something" that I find quite beguiling!

I’m very much enjoying mine. More so than I thought I would. My daughters still are rude about the swap, though!

A dodgy argument. I once owned a Harley which had Japanese electrics. Every time it rained, the bike broke down with electrical issues. The problem wasnt the source of the components but what HD had done with them.

Lets face it, buying a Porker or an F type, or a Ferrari or a Lambo etc is not a rational decision based on reliability, cost to run etc. They are expensive man toys like boats and small planes. I bought my Ferraris for the romance of the brand and its history as much as for the way it drives. I reckon it costs me at least £3 per mile to run it - the annual service this year admittedly with extras like belt change, cost £3k. and depreciation is mileage based at £1 per mile. And that is for an analogue 2003 car rather than the all singing and dancing 800bhp current models. But it does bring a smile to my face when I drive it and the owners club are a very sociable and likeable bunch.

Would I swap it for a Porker? Tested them many times and you cant help but be impressed by the teutonic efficiency. But they arent "special" in the way that both Ferrari and Morgan are. Mind you I wouldnt buy a modern Ferrari either.

A good mate organised a run out with about 25 porsches from the r9club we ran tail end charlie for the event once in the Aero and this year in the z4,talking to the guys they were all very happy with the reliability of their cars the much older ones having a few issue's as you would expect. The only complaint was from one of the guys who had sent his or sold his new electric Tycan i think it was back and was not happy with it at all. A really friendly bunch with no air's and graces with 25 cars going through Cardigan town the exhaust note was a bit fruity,I would take my chances of reliability on a newish boxter anyday......

Howard, as one who imagines himself to think logically I tend to disagree with the suggestion that buying a "man toy" may not be rationalised in some way ... I suspect there might be a professor of economics somewhere who runs such a toy.. (-:

I also suspect there are many who own such machinery and do so on a limited budget, even more so since the dawn of easy money and imaginative car finance which opened up ownership of vehicles to those who may not be able to afford to actually "buy" or own them long term, as witnessed by the number of short term owners for some high end sports cars and forum questions as to possible investment potential if not value retention of the machines over a very few years..?

I would however agree that Porsche is not as special as Ferrari. So why do I not own a Ferrari..? I suspect I could have bought a Ferrari for a similar market value to that which I paid out for my latest Porsche.. I guess that I did not comes down to a few factors, the first of which is reliability, followed by build quality and overall engineering standard of every aspect of air cooled 911`s that improved on both power output and fuel economy year on year for many a year.

Yeah my latest Porsche is not air cooled (sigh) but then there are logical reasons behind me not buying air cooled and buying a more modern Porsche.

My PCGB membership number is three digits long in a membership of thousands these days, which suggests I have been around Porsches and Porsche folk for a while and just as aerotaff experienced there are a whole load of very nice folk in Porsche circles who are more than happy to accept marque enthusiasts at face value... Jeez even when I dropped out of Porsche ownership I would still be invited along on weekend trips with my Morgan, which as you can imagine my old +8 tended to attract more attention than even the cream of the crop of Porsches in the group and on more than one occasion.. (-: . All of which was taken in good humour by the Porsche folks..

I could not begin to compare the cost of my Porsches relative to my +8 over the years, though I am pretty confident in typing that I have spent more on maintenance (including manufacturing defect insurance) in 16 months of my latest Porsche ownership than I have on 20 years of ownership of my old +8.. I am sure that if I owned both cars for another decade or more that the +8 would continue to outperform the Porsche on a cost per mile basis based upon the KISS principle alone..?

So, are both my Boxster S and Plus 8 "toys"? [Can't say man or woman now]

I'd argue that any vehicle that is more complex or more powerful than the minimum needed to transport the intended load is a toy.
By my reckoning about 33% of all cars on the road are "toys", most of them the product of German or Italian owned companies.
I'm not going to speculate on what this means, but comment that toys are bought to make the owner happy. Both the Porsche and Morgan make me happy, in very different ways. They also annoy me in very different ways.

Let's go further....most of the things I buy are toys, in that they do more than the basic job, but make me and SWMBO happy.

Ho hum....

I agree Peter.

Basic transport would mean a perfectly solid Dacia. Recent ones are even beginning to look quite smart and feel solid. If my only interest was reliability and durability then sales of Dacia would improve 1000% overnight. When I had my first mortgage and one car I still managed to work out how to make it fun. R5 GT Turbo as a company car anyone?

Even the 12 month old Phaeton V10 as a primary car was less than a BMW 320i on a lease. It also cost less to run at 36mpg and VW service costs.

I am guessing pretty much everyone on this board is here because they aim to see it as more than transport.

Everyone loves a Morgan. Even me, unless it's broken again.
