The later cars did have slightly wider wheels and tyres I believe, but they also weighed more. Our S2 only breaks traction when you deliberately provoke it now that it has MicPilot SuperSports on it front and rear. Going sticky is better than changing size with the problems that brings (speedo accuracy etc) I stuck with the standard size fronts as it was never really a problem for me. The S2 with 40 sidewalls are more comfy and tend to be more usable on our potholed roads than the 245-35/19 on the Coupe. With the 19's I avoid potholes and break away mid bend is a bit sharp. With the 18's you get more give and some squirm which is better in 90% of cases.
In the dry you need to push hard to break traction and the throttle pedal is quite long so you know what you are doing. In the wet all bets are off as they would be in any 1100kg, 300hp long wheelbase 2WD without electric nannies. Love it. Given you are sitting on the rear axle and can see the road to your side it makes it quite exciting. Other words may be used.
I have seen people go up 10mm width without much of a problem on the rear. In the front extra width does little, you can have an issue with the tyre rubbing in the inside of the arch on full lock. I think it can hit the AirCon pipes where they transit through and go into the front end. They are rare and not easy to get now so listen for it, I had to replace mine for that reason.
PPF is a good investment. Our S2 is 18 years old and had PPF from the start. Cowl, front wing faces, rear wheel arch base, mirrors and around the door handles have taken hits. Some have questioned doing the sills outside the door. Pro is they do take knocks from shoes, stones and loading. Con is that rubber heels leave black marks which look a bit ugly. I would cover them.
Spraying can be done well (serious prep given the aluminium issues) or quickly for showroom. The paint can bubble so it is worth getting a written statement on what happens if they did not do good prep in the indicator areas etc and it bubbles up. They are difficult areas to do well.
The S1/2/3 manuals have little space to rest your left foot so some people do ride the clutch. Clutch abuse is not something they normally suffer from due to light weight. The gap from 1st to 2nd and rev hang is normal and is best dealt with through pulling away in second. Floor hinged clutch also means careful movement of your foot is an acquired skill or lots of first day bunny hops. Normal. Worst issue is no resting place.
I look forward to seeing the pictures. They don't come up for sale very often as they are usually keepers. Do make certain you try a couple so you get a feel for the variety.

Hi Gents, I mentioned last year that I knew of a nice S1 for sale belonging to a late friend, his widow decided not to sell it but is now for sale again. Cream / dark red interior 2 owners originally owned by Phil Ledgerwood and upgraded by him. Fully sorted and cared for and immaculate. Pm me for details etc. Car is near Hitchin.

I'll see if I can find out who did the paintwork, really want to drive the car now to see what it's like.
I might consider getting a another set of alloys and keep the magnesium ones in perfect condition.
This car from what I can see hasn't had many owners, I think 3 or 4 but from what I can work out from the reg. Also I think a couple had it for a good few years down in Sussex.

Hi,
Thanks for that, the car I'm looking at has covered about 60,000 and dealer has replaced the flywheel, clutch and refurbished the steering rack.
The bodywork from what ive seen looks pretty spot on and would guess it's had a front end respray as it looks near perfect and doesn't have any PPF.
I was thing about swapping out the wheels for something. I did notice the rears where really narrow, is there space to increase the rear width a bit?

Pretty sure I know this car, quite a rare colour on an S1 Cream. If its the car I am thinking about it was in very good condition last time I saw it, used to frequent my local dealer's breakfast clubs.
