I`m pretty sure if the OP (Howard) has motoring interests similar to many here, he like others would have enjoyed the ten pages of discussion that followed on...? As far as I can make out since joining TM, is that thread drift is very much a part of the culture to be enjoyed.. .

Lovely to see your son driving an MX-5

We all start from a similar position of being 17 with a provisional licence, but with a very different experience growing up. We didn't have a car, so my experiences were limited to family & friends. Cars which made an impression were a Vauxhall Velox, FIAT 850 Coupe, and Lagonda Rapide ('50's). Sidevalve Fords, A35's A40's, Minors & Minis not so much.

We all end up down different paths but at least here we do share an interest in Morgan. This discussion highlights how diverse our tastes are. The MX5 is a great car. It's popular for a reason. It may not have a lot of character but stands out above most modern options.

I will never have a Caterham or Lotus now, but the appeal is lasting. I'm stuck in my youth, and can't see that changing anytime soon. Age does change perspectives though, so never say never!

So true, I was dropped in the deep end when I was 20 being given an old Morris 8 van. I couldn't use it until I had rebuilt the engine which was a bit of a learning curve. I moved onto other cars all of which needed work. Ended up with a Ford 100E in which I fitted a 1500cc Cortina engine, gearbox and front discs. Then came the children with the consequential tin tops. Years later SWMBO had an MX5 for a while but that wasn't practical for the grandchildren. Eventually after several years of browsing carandclassic.com I bought my Morgan. Back to carbs, coil and distributor. No computers!!
As for Caterhams and Lotus, my neighbour had 2 Elans which he used frequently. He was 93, so age is no excuse.

It’s been mentioned in the past, but we had a Mk1 Audi TT Quattro which I must say was a great looking and driving car. My wife still laments me selling it and I could easily buy another. I’ve noticed the prices of the early models steadily increasing of recent.

Only one thing better than a V8 and that's one of these.. very easy on the eye and my word the sound track is bloomin heavenly, I'd get it down our Devon lanes somehow.

Like the Alpine 110 every angle is good to my eyes and a V10 has great appeal for me.

Fuel inj ..... likewise here ... Mrs Image fell in love with the shape of the early TT (she is an artist and has an eye for design) ... we eventually ended up with one (245 bhp, quattro with the factory lowering/handling pack) .... what a little 'rocket roller-skate' ... she drove it enthusiastcally for years until the inevitable electronic gremlins saw it off as costing far more to repair than it was worth (by a long way at the time) ... I know it's a cliche, but they definitely are 'future classics' .... I always thought of it as a concept-car that escaped into the wild and was disappointed when the 'suits' at Audi made the Mk2 bigger and 'Audi-corporate' in design.
