From photos I've seen, they don't really seem to be around until the mid to late 50's.

The 4/4 70th anniversary was supposed to have options that matched the years of production. The brochure at the link only shows wires as available on the 1970s model onwards

Good question! The answer is buried somewhere in the "archive," but best guess is late
50s. Steel wheels were still common into the early sixties on bread & butter sports cars. Even into the late 60s/ early 70's...MGC/TR6.

They were an option on my first Midget in 1966.

My 64 4/4 Series V came with steel wheels as standard and wires as an option. With regard to steel vs minilites I think you are a lucky chap having the choice, when going to the Ballet or Opera you could wear the steels and when going to a Rock concert the minilites.

Now there’s a thing - taking the Morgan to the opera or ballet. And why not? The very idea makes me smile and affirms my decision to keep both sets and swap as the mood suits👍
