Quick update. I swapped the relays across and it still won't turn over for more than second or two. The battery was showing 13.33V. Should have a video below showing the non start.

Fuel pump would be my guess. What is the fuel pressure?

Mine was doing this on occasion and finally it did exactly what your does in the video. Changed to the Walbro pump and zero problems since.

What happens if after its coughed you then crank for 30 secs?

Also switch the dash display to voltage and check whilst cranking it stays above 8 volts.

I was going to say , but Chris beat me to it, the motor would have barely got up to speed before you let go of the button !
Keep it pressed for at least 15 secs / 30 max - if no sign of life after that you have a problem

Do not touch the throttle pedal when starting the engine, OK once it fires but not on cranking.

As the weather has been horrific I spent a bit of time tinkering. Checked the earth, put the Exide back in as it has a bit more cranking power, checked the cam belt and everything lines up correctly. Cleaned the leads and put new plugs in. It's weird, it still could start immediately or could take a few attempts. If it doesn't start then it almost sounds like it coughs or air is expelled and there's a ting noise and it just ends up with the starter spinning. It doesn't generally just turn over like a 'normal' engine would. Once it starts it idles perfectly and when driven is absolutely as you'd expect. It's just the weird starting thing that I dont get.

I intended to test the fuel pressure but ordered the wrong thing so need to find something that will allow the little valve to join the kit I bought. I think it has the Walbro pump but not 100%, I might pull it tomorrow just to check.

It may be that operating the fuel pump a few minutes before starting the engine promotes engine starting or the fact that the injectors end up leaking fuel when the engine is stopped with the fuel pressure remaining in the fuel circuit.

For what it is worth, the duty cycle on the starter motor is 6 seconds on and 10 seconds off. Using this pattern it often starts first time and always on the second within a few seconds.

Hallo KarlosFandango, hast du dein Problem gelöst? Ich habe die gleichen Startproblemsymptome mit meinem M3W und würde mich wirklich über jede Hilfe freuen.
Thank you
