I am also watching the goldrush around the charging industry, buy me, buy me, they all cried.

All of the new startups building up charging networks and making noise with the sole aim of selling them onto the forecourt providers like BP/Shell/Texaco etc and trotting away with the cash.

I would say baby steps but in this case it feels more like a baby crocodile making rumbling noises.

Decided to get it over with and go down the EV route at the next car change but intended to charge overnight with a normal plug as I don’t need a fast home charge. Just reading that this is not recommended and should only be used as a temporary measure.

So smart charger installation required - not an option.

What was the reasoning around standard plug in charge not being recommended ?

Our VW came supplied with a 3 pin charger - the only problem is that it is a VERY slow way to charge a battery (2.4kw compared to 7.2kw for a proper charger).

I put a fast charger in. No problems and as easy as wiring a plug.

Mine is a little more complicated than that - involves tapping into the main power feed, a couple of Henley boxes, a new RCD, a junction box and about 7 metres of armoured cable. I can wire a plug, but this is a little beyond my comfort zone.

1. Using a 3-pin charger frequently can be dangerous
A 3-pin domestic socket is not designed for continuous high-power usage, so most manufacturers recommend three-pin charging only in emergencies. A 3-pin plug charger is a high-drain device, meaning that you will need to run your 3-pin socket at 2.3kW or even 2.5kW for long periods of time. Running a domestic socket this close to its maximum 3kW capacity puts a strain on your circuit, the cables, and the socket, with the potential to cause serious problems, such as overheating and, in worst-case scenarios, fires. This is not the case for dedicated home chargers, as they are designed to support the electric load needed to charge an EV without any cause for concern.

Which brand have you gone for ?

My son’s new VW Tiguan Hybrid delivery has just been pushed back to September this year after having already waited for 12months. He could change to a diesel engined one and have it next week.

He’s probably sticking with the hybrid as he has solar / battery and Octopus Go to support it and also the lease price he locked in 12 months ago is already looking cheap compared with today’s prices.
