I've noticed an unusual 'knock/clunk' that has developed if I launch the car in 1st gear.
It only happens in 1st gear.
It only happens if you launch the car.
A 'normal' pull away from a standstill or even under half throttle doesn't replicate the noise, and the noise only ever happens once at a time.

I am confident it is not the engine, I almost feel its behind me or possibly the transmission tunnel...

Any idea what it could be?

My first thought was the drive belt skipping a tooth, although I am worried it's something else as I'm sure this never used to happen.

19 plate car with 4k miles.

Nose of bevel box hitting chassis maybe given vaguries of NVH mounting. Check for witness marks.

Most likely NVH kit hitting chassis at the front end just behind the gear box. My first M3W would give a couple bangs on a a full throttle getaway, I removed the NVH kit and fitted the Bleazey bevel box mount and it stopped doing it. my current M3W current doesn't do it

Thank you, both.

Is this just a characteristic of the car or would something mechanically be fundamentally wrong that has allowed this to happen?

While I don't launch very often, I am sure it didn't do it before last week... But I don't launch frequently enough to actually remember for certain.

Just check belt isn't too slack and do a spanner check on the NVH kit - front bolts at gearbox rear mount might nip up a quarter of a turn and same with the bottom rear 2 bolts where it mounts across the chassis.
If the belt isn't slack then personally I'd just live with it if its only when you 'launch' the car.
