Reading this thread and the Mail report makes me so glad I exited EV ownership when I did: in July 2022 I sold the Tesla M3 LR for about £3,000 less than I paid for it 12 months previously and with 10,000 miles run.
I begin to think that the motoring public has begun to realise that the claim, made by many, that "EVs are the answer" has no clothes.
EVs are an option as an urban/suburban runabout for those with off street parking and for people who view cars as just another appliance.
But for petrolheads who enjoy driving, for those that pound the motorways on company business and those that want to tour the country away from the urban sprawl they are not an option.
The Net Zero apostles thought the motorists would be easy converts, but they are not. There are many, many other realistic/viable targets, but they are much harder and much more costly to convert.

Let’s not forget that despite some predictable and understandable opinions on here, I’ve met plenty of EV owners that are very happy with them. We for one took advantage of the second hand price correction and now run an entertaining second car that has no VED and will probably average 1p per mile energy cost over the year with a mix of solar and off-peak charging. What’s not to like.

What was not taken into consideration is that the Governments could, and should, introduce a charge per mile (or kilometre) on vehicles that do not pay fuel tax and excise. Currently Victoria in Australia has such a system and NSW is planning to introduce it. This tax is currently under high court challenge but if the plaintiff win the case it will probably lead to a Federal system of tax for distance travelled. To be fair to all, if a tax for distance travelled is introduced for all vehicles, there should be a corresponding drop in fuel excise. As I have said before, and as is highlighted in the article, the current incentives for the purchase of EVs benefit only those who are in a position to buy new vehicles. This unfairly throws to costs (and loss of tax revenue) on those who are least able to absorb them.

As a further thought to add to the above there should be immediate disincentives for the purchase of unnecessarily powerful and heavy vehicles. The suburban mum does not need a 2.5 ton SUV, whatever to motive energy source, to drive the little darlings to school or do the shopping.
I can't see the logic in saving the planet by buying 3 tons of vehicle with all the manufacturing and eventual demolition resource, carbon and waste costs.

No planet B. Well yes, but somehow that has to convince the likes of South American nations China & dare I say it the USA. The UK trying it’s best to reduce more CO2 , is all very well but I believe the UK only contributes 2% of world global CO2 output.
If the world doesn’t get a handle on said countries the world has a limited life span.

The human species is no exception but uniquely the fate of the species is within its control. I remain unconvinced that it will manage to avoid extinction. The planet will recover, it doesn't need us.

Yes I agree but I'm really disappointed that nobody has posted a picture of their first experience of the milk float which must surely be the dodgems at the fair.

I'm doing my bit honest. The PV & batteries mean in April MTD we only bought in 2% of our electricty.
I am an EV sceptic as I think dragging the batteries around & claimnng zero emmission when there is a power station in there somewhere is wrong. Hopefully hydrogen will help us out. Time will tell. Meanhile I'll hang onto our ICE cars. The polos are low emmision & the Roadster is well fun.
